DOWNTOWN. This coffee house/bistro has such a loyal following that one location couldn't hold everyone; you'll find a second location at 5741 C Street SW. Evening entertainments such as poetry readings and open-mike nights are held regularly. Many locals drop in for a homemade cookie and an evening jolt of joe before hitting the bars or after dinner elsewhere (although Blue Strawberry does serve beer and wine, along with a mighty fine panini sandwich). Casual attire.

CEDAR RAPIDS. Hardwood floors, soft green walls and plenty of natural lighting give this brew pub/restaurant a more upscale feel than you'll find at typical sports bars. Young professionals drop by the lounge area for happy hour specials that include discounted cocktails, appetizers and award-winning craft brews (there are always ten on tap.) A large-screen television and dispersed, smaller TVs show sporting events, or you can play NTN trivia. Casual to smart-casual attire.

DOWNTOWN. This microbrewery not only crafts delicious lagers, ales, stouts and bocks, but they also match the different beverages to their menu items for no-fault ordering. Other specialty beers are available on tap, although locals will advise you to stick to the house brews. Planning on repeat visits? Ask about the "mug club," where you buy your own drinking vessel and get it refilled at a discount. Smart-casual attire.

DOWNTOWN. The "small theater" movement was born in Cedar Rapids in 1925 when a group of locals performed a play in artist Grant Wood's studio. Through the years, the group grew and changed names; in 1981, it moved to its current location and became known as Theatre Cedar Rapids. Now, the community theater is one of the largest in the country, thanks to a volunteer base of more than 900 and a theater school that serves more than 300 students. Each season, almost 30,000 patrons attend the eight plays that TCR stages.
