CENTRO. This cozy city center features an antiquated interior accented by bar mirrors, bar stools, and plenty of dark, stained wood. The sitting area in the rear has a few coffee tables and chairs, and there is also an upstairs lounge area that has built-in couches and a window that overlooks the square. Café del Real gets packed fairly frequently with social-types sipping coffee and beer. METRO: Opera.

CENTRO. This bar was a favorite of Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and that bull-fighting fool Ernest Hemingway (Papa's table is in the near righthand corner). Despite some very average tapas, it remains a popular tourist spot. The decor and the waiters' garb are reminiscent of a Teutonic bierkeller, lending an historic air. METRO: Sevilla or Sol

CENTRO. Located near the Royal Palace, "The Old King of Wines" bar opened in 1909 and has not changed much since. Inside are interesting photographs of Madrid at the turn of the century. Venture beyond standard tapas to sweet vermouth from the barrel, served with a tiny dipping cookie. The house specialty is "torrijas": bread slices soaked in milk and fried, served with cinnamon and honey. METRO: Ópera

CENTRO. Yet another haunt of the indefatigable Hemingway, Chicote is now a favourite with Madrid's beautiful people and the huge local gay scene. One of the city's finest cocktail bars, it sports a 1940s and '50s Spanish décor, and attracts great DJs playing anything from electro-soul to funk and to hip hop. METRO: Gran Vía

CENTRO. One of the oldest bars in a nighttime hotspot, this place has a little bit of everything: pool tables, all types of music, and even occasional go-go dancers. Even though its name means "don't tell anyone about it," bar employees often offer coupons for drink specials and the like to passersby. This cozy, dark wood bar levies no cover charge. CENTRO. Trocha is one of the better jazz and blues bars on the always jumping Calle Huertas. This small, cozy bar is decorated with cushions and bright colours and gets fairly crowded on the weekends. It is popular with the locals for its caipirinhas, a rum and lime drink from Brazil. There are several small couches and small tables along the interior walls that offer great places to soak in the atmosphere or enjoy a friendly conversation. METRO: Antón Martín.
