WEST ASHLEY. A longtime haven for beer aficionados, Gene's Hofbrau is not reputedly the oldest bar in town. It also has the greatest beer selection, with some 170 domestic and imported bottles and drafts. The food menu covers all the bases (wings, burgers, dogs, cheese fries, and even deep fried candy bars for dessert). Low-key and popular.

NORTH DOWNTOWN. Moe's Crosstown Tavern is the quintessential neighborhood watering hole. The beer is always cold, the food is hearty and satisfying, and the daily and happy hour specials are great. The burgers are a few notches above standard pub fare, with inventive toppings like goat cheese and poblano peppers, and the wings are near perfect. More than 20 beers, too.
