DOWNTOWN. This impressive London-style lounge – with its silky curtains, red pendant lights, intimate cafe tables and wing-back leather couches – certainly captivates the imagination and stimulates the senses. Velvet's sultry attitude appeals to the haute tastes of Charleston's young and trendy crowd, offering them everything from exotic hors d'oeuvres (read: beef-wrapped scallions or chorizo calzone) to impressive selections of cocktails, martinis, champagnes and sparkling wines. Until 10pm, cool lounge music is played at a low volume; afterwards, reins are turned over to a DJ. Keep your eyes peeled to the event calendar for their themed parties, which often become quite the scene.

DOWNTOWN. This fabulous place, frequented by a young professional crowd, is a great destination when you simply want to relax and enjoy drinks and appetizers (great hummus!). Accessible via elevator or stairs, the place is best experienced at sunset, when the city's spires and steeples are silhouetted against a glowing, multi-hued sky. Do keep in mind that the Roof Top is completely open-air and that its hours are dependent upon the weather. Live music six nights a week. A Charleston must.

DOWNTOWN. Henry's is conveniently located on Market, one of Charleston's most touristed streets. The room's focal point is a large, dark wood bar that serves a wide variety of spirits to both locals and tourists. If a snack is in order, a simple bar menu suits. If more private seating is your style, pull up a chair to one of the tall tables by the windows, and watch life pass by on the streets outside. Live music Friday-Saturday.
