MOUNT PLEASANT. Hungry families fill tables at this popular Mount Pleasant pasta joint, where locals return frequently, raving about the amazing lasagna. The evening is enhanced by the warm personality of chef-owner Jacques Bouguyon, who makes everyone feel at home. Although Capriccio's may be off the beaten track, it's certainly worth the trip.

MOUNT PLEASANT. Housed in a small strip mall, this French kitchen surprises with its tasty, authentic French cuisine. An order of crab stuffed mushrooms or escargot with garlic butter will whet your appetite for the full line of delicacies. For your main course opt for the charbroiled beef tenderloin or sautéed shrimp with Dijon mustard-mushroom cream sauce, each accompanied with bread and butter, and starch- and vegetable-of-the-day. Two classics that never grow old, chocolate mousse and crème caramel, make for an exquisite final course.

ISLE OF PALMS. For on-island dining, Morgan Creek at the IOP Marina offers the best, with a casually upscale ambience and views out over the water. Although there are numerous options, from steaks to fried shrimp, the kitchen really shines when preparing the fresh catch of the day, grilled or blackened to your specifications with a choice of six sauces and eight sides. Alternatively, you can head upstairs to the Upper Deck, which has similar but more casual food, a fun bar-like atmosphere and live music a couple times a week.

MOUNT PLEASANT. The Maverick restaurant group has "the knack." At their Old Village Post House, set in an elegantly restored 19th century building with an upscale dining room plus a casual tavern, patrons feast on fabulous Lowcountry dishes that change with the seasons and the chef's whims. Their signature oyster stew is a hearty concoction that's sure to please, as is that old Southern standby, shrimp and grits. Crab cakes and grilled steaks (especially with bourbon-mustard sauce) are excellent; service and wine are top-notch as well.

MOUNT PLEASANT. A welcome addition to the Mt. Pleasant dining scene, Red Drum takes the British gastropub concept in its own unique way. Focusing as much on food as on beer and wine, the owners have crafted a great menu with Southwest accents, as well as fantastic artisan cheese and beer or wine pairings. Beer aficionados will be quite happy here: there are a dozen draught beers (Guinness, Mad Hatter IPA, Dos Equis Amber, Spaten Franziskaner Hefe Wissen) and more than 30 in bottles. If wine is your quaff of choice, you can enjoy one of more than 15 by-the-glass selections plus dozens of bottles.

MOUNT PLEASANT. Restaurateur Sal Parco is well-known among Charleston foodies, and his foray into casual Italian is a success. Housed in a former chain pizza joint, the restaurant may not look like much from the outside, but inside it's warm and contemporary with art glass light fixtures and high center tables. Start with a perfectly-dressed salad or the rich portobello piccata, then enjoy house made tortellini, comforting spaghetti and meatballs, or an unusual but tasty dish of mussels with an orange-based sauce. The desserts are fabulous, so save room.

MOUNT PLEASANT. Right on the water, Shem Creek Bar and Grill does the casual beach bar/seafood joint quite well. The atmosphere is casual and fun, the food is good and the menu runs the gamut so there is something for most everyone's tastes. Popular options include Lowcountry boil, fried shrimp, oyster shooters, grilled steaks, steaks, burgers, gumbo, and shrimp and grits. The bar dispenses a few interesting beers too (Hobgoblin, Flying Dog, Palmetto Amber, Blue Moon, Guinness, Bass).

MOUNT PLEASANT. Despite a rather unappealing strip mall location, the diminutive Six Tables offers one of the finest dining experiences you're likely to encounter, anywhere. Jeremy Holst, one of the region's most talented young chefs, creates Southern-influenced New American cuisine for a daily-changing menu that incorporates the best local ingredients in dishes such as butter poached shrimp, seared quail breast over peach chutney, duck confit, and sea bass with ricotta gnocchi. The restaurant accommodates staggered seatings on Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday-Saturday evenings feature only one seating. Plan well in advance – reservations are hard to secure!

MOUNT PLEASANT. This up-and-coming tapas and wine bar attracts an appreciative clientele who enjoy inventive nibbles and fantastic sips. Situated next to the owner's petite shop, the café specializes in the dynamic pairing of wine and food. You can select the chef's five course menu (a steal at $35, or $60 with wine), or opt for tapas-sized tidbits or cheeses. The menu changes daily, but you'll find options such as smoked salmon mousse with grilled asparagus, lamb chops with herbed polenta, and seared duck breast with raspberry gastrique. The staff's collective experience and body of knowledge is impressive, to say the least – you will be in good hands here.
