JAMES ISLAND.   When the original Bowens burned down in 2006, it was a sad, sad day in Charleston. That same year, the owner accepted a James Beard award, and undaunted, he set about rebuilding the place that had been in his family for 60 years. It's a bit fresher looking now, but patrons are still encouraged to leave their mark on the walls, the oysters are still shoveled onto your table right from the makeshift steamer, and the Bud is still perfectly chilled. Not an oyster fan? Opt for fried shrimp, fish, or hushpuppies instead!   (© 10Best)

Bowen's is great
Bowen's never claimed to be a romantic fancy place. It's just got excellent daily fresh caught local seafood that is simply prepared so you can enjoy the flavor of the seafood....not the sauce and sides that you might swoon over in a fine dining restaurant. This place is for people that enjoy sitting over a salt marsh creek and listen to a boom box someone else brought in and crowd around a table with your pals over a steamin hot pile of oysters ready to shuck the night away and enjoy some cold brews with it. If you don't like fun lowcountry activities like camping, shucking oysters, drinkin beer out of the bottle, relaxing and enjoying your company while treating yourself to real seafood and all the flavor that comes with it, then you should probably go somewhere a lil more designed to keep your khakis pleated, pearls shiny, and polkadots clear of a potential juicy oyster run-ins. Happy eating!

this place is a total shithole. the tarter sauce is from a little ketchup style packet, the cocktail sauce tastes like water. This is not a restaurant, its a shack on a pier. me and my girl had our dinner ruined by thousands of mosqoitos, i couldnt even focus on my over fried fish and shrimps.... which by the way were at best "average." all i can say good about this place is that i made it out alive. the owners are jerks, the food sucked, and the ambiance is non existant. if you want some ordinary fish and shrimps with a nice view, i'd recommend it... if you want to go somewhere for a nice meal on a date(with someone whos not a mosquito) go somewhere else. i'm never going to come back to this website again just for recomending this god awful restaurant.
