About 10Best's Charleston Attractions & Activities Selections:
Most of Charleston's attractions revolve around history, particularly Civil War history. Fort Sumter, the site of the war's first battle, features the famous fortress and an on-site museum. Horse-drawn carriage tours through the downtown historic district allow visitors to see beautiful antebellum mansions, awe-inspiring churches and elaborate gardens. For a more in-depth view of period architecture, do a tour of the 19th century Nathaniel Russell House, or visit one of the preserved plantation homes outside the city, such as Middleton Place or Magnolia Plantation. Second to its history, Charleston's beaches make it appealing to travelers. Perfect for a day trip, Folly Beach is a 20-minute drive from downtown, and neighboring beaches such as Kiawah Island and Isle of Palms attract guests with their prestigious golf courses and resorts.
