When Mono Loco opened I was excited that finally a Cuban Restaurant would be found here in C’ville so that I would not have to drive to Kuba Kuba in Richmond. I have dined at Mono Loco on two separate occasions. Each time I was very disappointed with the quality of the food. Mono Loco advertises the cuisine to be of Cuban Flair, but it falls very short of anything being Cuban. First, black beans are not supposed to be spicy as in hot. In fact most Cuban food is not HOT spicy. Many tradition Cuban dishes are missing from the menu. Ropa Vieja, Lechon Asado, Bistec de Palomia, or Picadillio. Or sandwiches like Cuban Sandwich or a Media Noche. Instead of the Cuban dishes I expected to find there were tradition Mexican dishes. Caribbean food and Mexican food are very different. Cuban food does not entail burritos and quesadillas. I found Mono Loco to be just another Mexican restaurant trying to disguise it’s self as Cuban. I would not recommend Mono Loco as a Cuban restaurant.
