DOWNTOWN MALL. An upscale, gallery-esque watering hole located right on the Downtown Mall, Blue Light is a favorite with the young professional crowd, thanks to its after-work cocktails. Stark red walls and an aubergine-hued ceiling are bathed by track lighting, and cool jazz and contemporary blues music whisper in the background. Lounge in the cushy seated area up front or find a place at the bar where, between lunch and dinner, a short but sweet raw bar menu is available. Dinner includes such nouveau entrees as Mediterranean-style baked halibut, Mussels Blue Light in a saffron tomato broth, and mango-peppered shrimp. You'd also be remiss not to check out an appetizer or two – the calamari fritti and tuna carpaccio earn particular praise.

DOWNTOWN MALL. Known as a gathering spot for Charlottesville's hip, trendy professionals, this Euro restaurant and bar on the Mall features an industrial-themed setting. Hardwood floors and a wrought iron-trimmed loft provide contrast to gray- and red-hued walls, exposed duct work, and near-Gothic appeal. The staff, with their dyed hair, unique piercings, and assorted tattoos, keep pace with the restaurant's artsy attitude. To the rear of the restaurant are pool tables and a bistro-style area that's a terrific place to see and be seen.

THE CORNER. A pressed tin ceiling and weathered walls mark this Corner old-timer, which dates from the 1920s. During Prohibition years, the Virginian tried to change with the times and corked its taps, going from a full-service restaurant to a soda shop. Thankfully, those years are long gone! Today, the narrow bar and restaurant fill quickly with smartly-clad students and young professionals, who clamor for superbly mixed cocktails and cold pints of PBR just waiting to be downed. The menu features a wide range of upscale pub grub, including hummus and pita bread, BBQ ribs, Virginia prime rib, and apple bourbon-marinated chicken.
