One of the Charlottesville area's most elegant dining experiences, the historic Clifton Inn has received rave reviews by more than a few regional and national publications. The seasonal prix fixe and à la carte menus include a handful of traditional American options – Black Angus beef, lamb, bison, and Virginia wild game, all of which are served with fresh, locally-grown vegetables and bread baked in the inn's own bakery. You'll dine in the elegant main dining room (where white linens, sterling silver, fine china, and antiques recollect the romance of the early 19th century) or on the charming verandah. Private parties may dine à la the Continent in the wine cellar, surrounded by scores of fine varietals. Reservations are a must.

DOWNTOWN MALL. A trendy, post-workday gathering spot on West Main, Continental Divide has established a fine reputation as one of Hooville's top places for Southwestern-style cuisine. Often loud and festive, the restaurant serves up terrifically potent margaritas to go along with spicy quesadillas and enchiladas. Urbane dishes such as pan-seared grouper and seasoned pork loin chop help round out the versatile menu. Since the restaurant tends to get crowded early, reservations are a good idea ... then again, so is hanging out in the bar area and making some new acquaintances.

DOWNTOWN MALL. This elegant restaurant eschews the downtown tradition of weathered brick walls and rustic hardwood flooring for a more contemporary approach – graceful archways separating the dining room, romantic lighting, immaculately appointed tables, and a swanky bar area. The menu includes a variety of Regional American dishes, including the house crab cakes, live Maine lobster, and signature Grille Porterhouse. Add to the entree two of their delicious sides – onion crisps or asparagus with hollandaise, to name two – and you've a meal fit for royalty. Reservations are encouraged.
