DOWNTOWN. Keep your eyes peeled or you might miss this nondescript gem, which is quite possibly one of Charlottesville's top eateries. The telltale Pepsi sign exists as a holdover from when the building served as a diner where railroad workers could board for the night. Inside, rustic plank-wood flooring and walls remain, and cozy dining areas include a dimly lit mezzanine, a Western-style bistro-bar, an elegant upstairs dining room (where the old sleeping quarters were), and a hidden patio garden in the rear. Featured menu items include pan-seared veal liver with Pommery mustard sauce, Dijon-and-Tabasco-marinated Cuban steak, honey rum-glazed pork loin with adobe sauce, and sweet corn tamales. Private parties may reserve the C & O's gallery space, which is decorated with original artwork. Reservations are strongly recommended.

THE CORNER. Inviting and unpretentious, this Corner charmer specializes in Greek and Mediterranean fare, with a menu that includes everything from homemade moussaka and lamb souvlaki to a grilled chicken pita and a hummus-and-sprouts sandwich. Place your order at the deli-style counter and grab the first table you see – the place tends to get crowded quickly when lunch or dinner bells ring. Two cafe-style tables can be found outside on the stoop, ideal if traffic isn't heavy.

Many locals consider this Emmet Streeter to be one of Hooville's top Italian eateries, a mantle it has held for the better part of three decades now. Casual and friendly, the restaurant is known far and wide for its fabulous pizza, tasty gyros, and delicious hot sandwiches, like the eggplant parmigiana (smothered in tomato sauce, Genoa salami, provolone cheese, and their special dressing) and the meatball and sausage with melted mozzarella cheese. Those looking for heartier fare should check out the homemade pasta dishes – few items compare to Villa's cannelloni or tortellini parmigiana. A take out menu is available.
