BARBOURSVILLE. In recent years, several Virginia vineyards have begun to make names for themselves in oenological circles. The tradition began at Barboursville during the mid-'70s, when the estate's owners discovered that Orange County soil – as Thomas Jefferson had tried to prove more than two centuries earlier – is ideal for vine growing. The original Barbour home, now just ruins, was designed by Jefferson and featured the statesman's signature Classical style. The winery is open for tours and tastings.

WAYNESBORO. Just west of Charlottesville lies one of the nation's most scenic public routes: Skyline Drive. This road winds past mountain summits, waterfalls, and rolling green hills, all the while offering panoramic views of the majestic Shenandaoh Valley and Piedmont Region of Virginia. Running adjacent to Skyline Drive and the lenghth of the park is a 101-mile section of the Appalachian Trail, the hiking trail (with various access points) that follows the mountains from Georgia to Maine. Those wanting to walk sections of the AT are treated to unparalleled vistas and, with any luck, a few brushes with foxes, bears, wild turkeys, bald eagles, and other permanent residents of the park.
