DOWNTOWN. This family-owned establishment has been pleasing diners since before downtown Chattanooga's renaissance as a dining destination. Soft blue walls and hardwood floors provide a serene atmosphere enhanced by the soft music playing in the background and the candle-lit, linen-covered tables. The menu changes regularly but you can always expect a vegetarian pasta option, seafood dishes such as salmon kabobs served with dipping sauce, and rack of lamb with cumin glaze. Meals are best complemented by a glass of wine from 212 Market's extensive cellar. There is a happy hour Monday-Friday from 4pm-7pm. Smart-casual to dressy attire. Reservations suggested.

DOWNTOWN. This spot is the perfect choice for a balmy day because you can eat outside on the deck overlooking the Tennessee River. Even inside, wide windows offer beautiful, unobstructed water views. Start your meal with the hearts of iceberg salad topped with blue cheese and bacon or, perhaps, some oysters from the raw bar. Sandwiches are available for light suppers, and all are served with the house-special olive oil-fried potatoes. Entrees include smoked pork with grilled scallions in margarita sauce, wood-spit roasted chicken, and fried catfish. Smart-casual attire. Reservations accepted.

DOWNTOWN. This elegant restaurant is located downtown in the Chattanoogan Hotel. Most diners start their meal with a trip to the antipasto bar, a sensory delight overflowing with marinated vegetables, cheeses, and meats. The house specialty is thick-cut steaks and chops, but there is also an extensive selection of seafood. Adventurous diners will want to ask about the Chef's Table, located in the kitchen, where you can watch your meal being prepared and, perhaps, get a few special snacks. Along with the very creative dinner menu, the Broad Street Grille also features a breakfast buffet, a lunch buffet, and an elaborate Sunday brunch. Smart-casual to dressy attire. Reservations suggested.

Be sure to arrive at this steakhouse with your appetite intact. To save room for the 20-ounce rib-eye steaks and 14-ounce pork chops, start your meal light with the fried green tomatoes. Sides include the jumbo potato and thick, hand-cut onion rings. The chicken and fish dishes are equally hearty. Sample the hand-breaded scrod topped with dill-caper sauce or the Tennessee country chicken topped covered in hickory-smoked ham and cheese and served over rice pilaf. If you have room for dessert, the variety available will leave your head swimming – try the apple carmel poundcake for a real treat. Smart-casual attire. Reservations suggested.

HAMILTON PLACE. This restaurant is all-American, right down to the wines available. Start with a bowl of the homemade soup – a different one is offered each day. Entrees include hardwood-grilled steaks and baby back ribs. A daily seafood special offers an option for lighter appetites. All of the restaurant's desserts are made from scratch daily, and the carrot cake with cream-cheese icing is especially sublime. Smart-casual attire. Reservations strongly suggested.
