Before your trip down, stop at the snack bar for a comforting nibble and be sure to buy a souvenir at the gift shop.

DOWNTOWN. What was once an abandoned shipping yard has been transformed into a beautiful 7-acre oasis in downtown Chattanooga. Take a ride on the vintage carousel – rescued from a failed amusement park and revitalized by artists hired by the city – or simply enjoy a picnic on the grassy slopes. During the summer, a fountain cools down the kiddies and their folks, and the pavilion frequently hosts concerts.

ROSSVILLE. "Lake Winnie" offers fun for the entire family. The brave-at-heart can try the Cannon Ball Roller Coaster or the Bowler Roller, while mini-golf and the ring toss appeal to the more timid of us. On hot days the Pipeline Plunge, a five-story water slide, is just the ticket. The Carousel Café serves pizza, sodas, and other tasty snacks.

DOWNTOWN. Back in the 1800s riverboats just like this one cruised the Tennessee River, sometimes docking in Chattanooga. Today, the 500-passanger Southern Belle recreates some of that bygone glamour with sightseeing, lunch, and dinner cruises. The ship has three decks, so you can view the passing scenery from a variety of vantages.

DOWNTOWN. This 22-acre park stretches downtown along the Tennessee River from the Chickamauga Dam out to the Tennessee River Gorge. Joggers and walkers are plentiful, and a huge playground is popular with the little ones. Fish from any of five piers or launch your boat and fish on the river. Covered picnic areas make this a year-round destination regardless of the weather.

The bridge fell into disrepair but has been refurbished and converted into a pedestrian walkway – the longest in the world at a length of ½ mile. Stroll the bridge on a clear day and you can see Coolidge Park and the Tennessee Aquarium.
