MAGNIFICENT MILE. One of the many reasons The Capital Grille has become a carnivore's mecca for Chicagoans and visitors alike is the melt-in-your-mouth, dry-aged in-house beef. Everything from the signature Veal Chop with Roquefort butter sauce to Steak au Poivre with Courvoisier cream is tantalizing. "Wine Spectator" magazine granted The Grille a "Best of Award of Excellence" for their 300-bottle wine list. The decor is simple yet elegant with Tiffany lamps, sumptuous carpeting, rich brown and forest green hues, and large windows. A lovely wine room is available for private events and occasionally serves as an additional bar.

RIVER NORTH. Chef Michael Kornick's much-loved eatery is one of the most hip and happening destinations in the city, and it's definitely a place to see and be seen. Delightfully presented and decadently delicious, its contemporary American cuisine features such innovative dishes as venison with onions braised in rich zinfandel and served with apple endive salad, rack of pork with softened cabbage and figs, and homemade pasta tossed with butter and capped with black truffle shavings. Desserts by resident pastry chef Amy Sampson will have you swooning. EL: Brown or Purple Line to Chicago

WARREN PARK. Tiffin boasts an upscale interior and very qualified servers. Ceilings painted with blue clouds and walls with wood wainscoting define the interior. The authentic menu features specialties such as tandoori king prawns, chicken tikka masala (chicken in a tomato-cream sauce), lamb kabobs, and vegetable samosas. The menu includes a large selection of vegetarian items as well as scrumptious desserts. Try the gulab jamun – fried cheese balls doused in a honey syrup.

With white linens on the tables, crystal chandeliers, and royal service, this is the perfect place for any special occasion. Lots of the city's best and brightest agree that you can't top Morton's.

LOCKPORT. Located in a meticulously restored Victorian, Tallgrass promises an experience for the senses. The most popular choices are versions of the fixed price menu, which includes three, four, or five courses. Start with baby mussels in leeks and a cream sauce flavored with Brie, or sample rich, smoked salmon gnocchi. Then, move seamlessly to grilled veal tenderloin atop creamy mashed potatoes or grilled salmon with corn pudding. The drive may be a bit farther than you're used to, but Tallgrass is well worth the trip.

LINCOLN PARK. This restaurant offers the best of both worlds – Chinese cuisine and a great sushi bar. Mandarin and Szechuan entrees include both mild and spicy dishes. Try the kung pao chicken, the crab rangoon, or the mooshu pork. The authentic sushi bar offers only the freshest fish. The interior of Dee's is very pleasant with comfortable booths, skylights, a fireplace, and a lovely outdoor garden dining area perfect for warm evenings.

GREEKTOWN. This is Greek dining at its most elegant with perfectly grilled lamb chops, unique meze (Greek appetizers), and classic takes on fresh fish. The dining room is a feast for the eyes with intricate tiling and graceful arches. The kebabs and the fisherman's risotto are highly recommended. Sit back and enjoy fine Greek cooking while a soothing piano plays in the background. EL: Blue Line UIC/Halsted

RIVER NORTH. Chicago-style pizza has won droves of ardent fans, and this restaurant is probably the downfall for most of them. Just try to resist the irresistible, deep-dish Chicago pizza with oozing cheese, rich sauce, and fresh toppings from its crisp, cornmeal-infused crust. The spacious dining room seats 500 but still the lines form, and people eagerly await what is considered the best pizza in the town (or maybe anywhere). The ambience is casual with graffiti-covered walls (no profanity!) and dark booths. But people don't come here for the environment; they come for the pizza. You can even take a frozen one home if you call ahead.

SOUTH LOOP. This unique coffee house, full of hip, colorful decor, provides the perfect backdrop for eye-opening breakfasts. Each dish has a creative twist, such as raspberry cheesecake hotcakes, pumpkin pancakes with toasted pistachio praline butter, and decadent ginger walnut pancakes with maple mascarpone cream. If that doesn't get your mouth watering, try a breakfast burrito, eggs Florentine, or the lightest, most flavorful hash browns in town. Great brunch menu on weekends.
