MAGNIFICENT MILE. This Continental classic has a popular jazz brunch on Sundays. Regulars line up year-round to sit at the outdoor tables (enclosed in winter) that boast lovely views of the famous Water Tower. Check the long chalkboard for info about the day's news, stock quotes, sports results, and lots of other useful facts. LAKE VIEW. The chef at this famous restaurant (a favorite of locals) calls his cuisine "urban heartland," and it has a focus on locally grown ingredients and fresh herbs and spices. The dining room is classy and rustic with dark woods, a green color scheme, and a long bar. Dishes are classic and hearty, including French toast, omelets, Bloody Marys, and addictive sticky buns. The signature appetizers are smoked trout in an herbed pancake with Granny Smith apples and salmon caviar.

RIVER NORTH. Saturday brunch earns raves at this city favorite, which is considered by some to be the best Mexican restaurant in America. The room boasts folk art and vivid colors inside and sunny sidewalk seating outside. The ever-changing menu offers artistic dishes from award-winning chef Rick Bayless, including authentic tacos, tamales, breakfast burritos, and desserts like almond cake and buttermilk-lime ice cream.

RIVER NORTH. House of Blues is well-known for its cool, hip decor and its stellar line-up of music. It's also known for its brunch, which includes an all-you-can-eat buffet with cooked-to-order omelets, amazing Cajun potatoes, tons of fresh fish dishes, waffles, sausage, and numerous other items. While you dine, sit back and enjoy an hour of some of the most heartfelt gospel music you'll ever hear. Church choirs come with talented soloists and their own musicians, and they always put on unforgettable shows.

LINCOLN PARK. Set in the middle of an idyllic park, this cozy cabin is known for its great brunch. The simple structure keeps a focus on the views – tree-lined ponds, bursts of flowers, and the city skyline – and the food. Brunch is a prix fixe three-course extravaganza with well-prepared American specialties like Alaskan halibut with spring asparagus, salmon, apple pie, and pecan pie with cinnamon ice cream.

OLD TOWN. This tiny restaurant has only a dozen or so tables, and it's usually full of people seeking spectacular Mexican cooking. Sunday brunch includes an array of egg dishes (omelets and egg-tortilla combinations), many of which are bold, fiery, and served with hot pepper salsa. You'll also find items like grilled quail and great desserts like vanilla-roasted pineapple rings.

ROSCOE VILLAGE. Watch passers-by through large plate-glass windows in this bright, cheery brunch nook. The fare is vegetarian, but with ingredients like soy sausage, veggie bacon, and marinated tofu, you won't miss the meat. Omelets and frittatas contain tasty add-ins like feta, goat cheese, pesto, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes. French toast is dressed up with peach butter and maple syrup or with raspberries and whipped cream. A delicious variety of pancakes, cereals, and granola rounds out the offerings. WEST SIDE. Don't come here for health food! Come for Southern-style soul food, full of flavor and served in a casual, relaxed environment. The quirky, funky warehouse-style space (abstract paintings of chickens and eggs adorn the walls) offers breakfast on weekdays and a popular weekend brunch. Try fluffy biscuits, French toast, salmon cakes with hollandaise, or a house specialty called Red Eggs, which consists of two eggs on a corn tortilla with black beans, cheese, hot sauce, sour cream, and salsa. Something for everyone, including vegetarians. Buy a cool t-shirt on your way out. Casual attire.
