10Best's Chicago Restaurants

-- Kelly Sigmon, 10Best Travel Editor

A restaurant town in the truest sense of the term, Chicago extends far beyond Polish sausage, deep-dish pizza, and world-class steaks. Thanks to corner vendors and legends like the original Pizzeria Uno, Gino's East, Gene and Georgetti, and Morton's, those respective cuisine types have long been represented all over town. These days, visitors can sample fare prepared by some of the world's most innovative chefs at places like the West Loop's Blackbird and Tru in Streeterville. The Everest, on the Chicago Stock Exchange's 40th floor, serves a fabulous city view alongside artistically presented Alsatian fare. The city's dining landscape isn't all cutting-edge, however, as proven by down-home establishments like Hyde Park's Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop, the Loop's Louisiana-style Heaven on Seven, and Soul Kitchen in Wicker Park, which specialize in comfort fare par excellence. Celebrity-affiliated restaurants also have a niche, led by lively Harry Caray's, where the hall-of-fame announcer's rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" somehow fits right in with Sicilian-style veal chops and bone-in chicken Vesuvio.
