IRVING PARK. This Irish pub has been garnering an increasingly steady following since its opening in 1973. The pub is part restaurant, part club as it features a full menu of authentic Irish food (fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and Irish sausage) as well as live music nightly. The best local, regional, and national acts perform on Abbey's stage, and the musical mix includes everything from Indie Rock to traditional Celtic music. RIVER NORTH. The owners of this authentic Irish pub are themselves former residents of the Emerald Isle, so they feel they have the corner on the market when it comes to recreating a truly Irish bar. Fortunately, many locals tend to agree. A stone fireplace dominates the room and sets a cozy tone for the pub, and Guinness and 13 on-tap beers keep everyone in a good mood. Antique lamps, an old piano, and a lovely wood bar add to the ambiance.

RIVER WEST. Emmit's fulfills all the requirements for a textbook Irish pub – a great selection of beer and scotch, traditional grub like shepherd's pie, and live Irish music on weekends. The professional 20-somethings who comprise most of the clientele don't seem to mind this distinct lack of trendiness. Instead, they revel in neighborhood ambience, high-backed booths, and touches of Celtic decor that make Emmit's such a welcoming place to have a pint or two of Guinness and some hot fish and chips.

RIVER NORTH. This River North hotspot offers authentic Irish pub atmosphere with food, drink, and entertainment to match. Inside, you'll find quintessential dark-wood bar areas and plenty of "pub" ambiance, though the place does tend to get packed quickly after the sun goes down. A patio towards the rear is a favorite hangout, no matter the season. Fadó features live music – dancing is always encouraged – as well as special events to celebrate soccer (football!) matches. To mark your visit to this Chicago favorite, be sure to stop by the gift shop and pick up a few things Irish.

OLD TOWN. Open late, this casual pub attracts sports fans and socializers in need of a well-poured drink. The youngish, upscale crowd is usually a mix of locals and visitors to the city. The bar is very capable and deftly serves a range of cocktails, vodka, whiskey, and beers (bottle or on tap) to eagerly waiting patrons. The menu includes a mix of standard appetizers. A rear dining area provides for a quieter environment than the main bar area.

STREETERVILLE. Timothy O' Toole's is a bustling sort of place that features a number of entertainment options – TV's, pool tables, dartboards, interactive trivia games, video games, and of course, the drink menu that includes microbrews as well as domestic and imported beer both on tap and by the bottle. Keep in mind, this place stays rather busy. In fact, they've poured more than 4 million pints of beer and served more than 150 tons of wings since opening in 1992.
