GOLD COAST. This restaurant combines French and Vietnamese cuisines to glorious effect. Evoking images of French-occupied Saigon, the interior is full of stylish bamboo accents, photographs, banana trees, and rattan furnishings. An upscale crowd turns out for dishes such as seared whole red snapper with chile peppers and garlic, chicken breast in coconut curry, or grilled purée of shrimp with angel hair. You can't go wrong with anything on the lengthy, well-rounded menu, and the wine list offers plenty of French classics. EL: Red line to Chicago/State

SOUTH LOOP. Opera, somewhat surprisingly, delivers an acrobatic twist on regional Chinese cuisine in a onetime warehouse that blends wood-paneled walls with a collage of lamps and lights in riotous color. Begin with Eight Immortal squid, progress through spicy Singapore noodles and sweet pea-shoot stir fry, or choose the three preparations of Peking duck. Options for vegetarians abound as well. Chef Paul Wildermuth's dishes are all rooted in Mandarin traditions yet are thoroughly modern. Funky and entertaining.

RIVER NORTH. This elegant combination of French and Thai cuisines has met with great success in London, New York, and Hong Kong, and the Chicago branch promises to be just as successful. The elegant dining room is a spectacle unto itself with clean lines, neutral colors, and sheer panels. Sautéed foie gras is perfect with warm mango and ginger, and crab spring rolls are light and delicate. Main dishes include monkfish or duck breast with sesame. A perfect meal from start to finish.
