RIVER NORTH. Elegant and exquisite, this stately hotel dining room serves French-Mediterranean cuisine and has a penchant for fresh seafood. The contemporary menu includes dishes like foie gras, duck breast, Maine lobster, and fresh scallops. An elegant interior features gold walls, rich leather chairs, an open kitchen, and fine china. The large wine list includes over 600 varieties. Impeccable service too.

HIGHLAND PARK. French, French, and more French! The chef's tasting menu consists of seven fabulous courses and is accompanied by spectacular wines. In fact, Carlos' is said to have one of the "greatest wine lists in the world" by "Wine Spectator." Look for items like seared yellowfin with crushed macadamias and caramelized onion, escargot in brioche with roquefort cream sauce, and sweetbreads with grilled asparagus and smoked fig sauce. Perfect desserts round out the menu.

LAKE ZURICH. This charming restaurant prides itself on serving authentic French fare in a casual, welcoming atmosphere. Try casserole provençale du bistro – duck confit, andouille sausage, and short ribs over vegetables. Or order ravioli of rock shrimp and grilled sea scallops. The knowledgeable staff makes patrons feel at home, and despite a strip mall locale, the restaurant has a lovely interior.

THE LOOP. Aptly named, this superior French Country restaurant sits 40 stories above Chicago. Reputed chef Jean Joho brings a taste of Alsace to the cuisine, providing it a simple sensuality. A representative entree sandwiches a disc of wild hare between fried potato and a soft quail egg. Other options include roasted chestnut soup, wild mushroom consommé, potato-crusted halibut, and venison filet. The wine list holds its own next to the menu's world-class selections. STREETERVILLE. Les Nomades is quintessentially formal and quintessentially French. Quiet, murmuring table conversation, peppered with "mmms" and "aahs," adds to the refined atmosphere. The downstairs dining area is white, crisp and professional, whereas the cozier upstairs venue features wood paneling and a comforting fireplace. Signature dishes include almond-crusted foie gras and roasted monkfish. Civilized dining at its best.

LOCKPORT. Located in a meticulously restored Victorian, Tallgrass promises an experience for the senses. The most popular choices are versions of the fixed price menu, which includes three, four, or five courses. Start with baby mussels in leeks and a cream sauce flavored with Brie, or sample rich, smoked salmon gnocchi. Then, move seamlessly to grilled veal tenderloin atop creamy mashed potatoes or grilled salmon with corn pudding. The drive may be a bit farther than you're used to, but Tallgrass is well worth the trip.

STREETERVILLE. An evening at Tru presents posh dining in elegant, simple surroundings. The bar serves over a dozen varieties of champagne by the glass, perfect for priming the palate. Expect to spend at least two hours at a dinner that constantly elevates your tastes. Three-course tasting menus may include salmon mousse with chilled tomato soup, tender veal with artichokes in a lush napoleon, and lobster prepared three ways: lobster bisque, lobster mushrooms, and lobster salad. A sommelier is on hand to assist with wine selections, and service is unparalleled.
