RIVER NORTH. This elegant restaurant specializes in Northern Indian cuisine and is known for its tandoori cooking. Clay ovens powered by mesquite wood cook not only breads but fish, chicken, and lamb to perfection. The unobtrusive, attentive staff and tasteful interior create an upscale dining experience. A lunch buffet adds value, and curries are also an earthy, delicious treat.

LINCOLN PARK. Dishes from the tandoor – marinated in spicy yogurt, then quickly grilled and roasted – are the main attraction at Indian Grill. The Lincoln Park mainstay not only delights with tandoori feasts but offers other traditional plates as well: chickpeas and potatoes, chicken korma with cashews and cream, and fiery lamb vindaloo. The weekend brings a reasonably priced lunch buffet with a host of favorites. For dessert, mango ice cream is highly recommended. Go on a Friday or Saturday to catch live sitar music.

RIVER NORTH. This upscale Indian restaurant features tandoori (clay oven) and Karahi (Indian wok) items prepared with only the freshest ingredients. Tandoori murg, a half-chicken marinated in yogurt and spices, is the house specialty. In addition to meat and poultry, numerous vegetarian options are available. Curry, of course, is omnipresent. The subdued interior – gauze drapery partitions, Indian art, light woods, and fine linens – offers a wonderful setting in which to dine.

EVANSTON. This eatery with the interesting name – it serves Indian and Nepalese cuisine – serves top-quality fare, and the lunch buffet provides great value with hot entrees, salads, and desserts. The menu features vegetarian selections, tandoori dishes, and lots of options centered around chicken, lamb, or seafood. Drinks include Himalayan tea, wine, and Indian beers. The interior gains interest with colorful Himalayan prints, and traditional Indian music plays overhead.

LAKE VIEW. This restaurant sets the standard for neighborhood Indian cuisine. They offer a large and well-presented buffet as well as tasty menu selections. Start off with a bowl of the lentil & vegetable soup or a vegetable pakora (mixed vegetable fritters with a dipping sauce). Seafood, lamb, chicken, stuffed breads, kebabs, and specialty clay oven tandoori items round out the menu. Need a suggestion? Try the Boti Kebabs, marinated and grilled lamb served atop mint chutney.

WARREN PARK. Tiffin boasts an upscale interior and very qualified servers. Ceilings painted with blue clouds and walls with wood wainscoting define the interior. The authentic menu features specialties such as tandoori king prawns, chicken tikka masala (chicken in a tomato-cream sauce), lamb kabobs, and vegetable samosas. The menu includes a large selection of vegetarian items as well as scrumptious desserts. Try the gulab jamun – fried cheese balls doused in a honey syrup.

WARREN PARK. A sister restaurant to Tiffin, this Indian establishment is more scaled down and not quite as elegant interior-wise. However, the food is just as tasty. Try the South Indian vegetarian cuisine that includes a range of options. Start off with the Sambar Vada, fried lentil donuts dipped in Sambar, or the Aloo Bonda, lentil dumplings topped with onion and potato. House specialty items include Malabar Adai, pancakes made with mixed lentils and vegetables, or the Pesarattu, moong dhal and rice crepe topped with onion and chilies.
