EVANSTON. Resembling a diner from the mid '60's, this eatery serves deliciously basic fare that has transformed first-timers into a virtual cult following of locals. Early morning devotees chow down on scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, pancakes, and biscuits. The worn brick exterior and striped awnings welcome diners into small digs that feel like home.

RIVER NORTH. This steakhouse gets high marks for affordable prices and great steaks, salads, and baked potatoes. What's the secret? Some say it's because all three owners are always on-site to make sure everything is perfect. Others say that the quality and value can't be topped. And, here's the trivia buzz...there's a picture of every mayor of Chicago on the walls! Even City Hall doesn't have them all.

MAGNIFICENT MILE. If you find yourself in need of a little pampering, try this cozy Italian eatery, where white tablecloths, an open kitchen, crystal chandeliers, and superb service make you feel as if you've just returned home from the war. While most pastas are nothing short of excellent, risotto Volare and osso buco are worth special attention. During warmer months, ask for a sidewalk table.

RIVER NORTH. An institution and a draw since 1941, this establishment is one of the city's last men's club steak houses. All the waiters are male, and the maitre d' is on a first-name basis with regulars. Moreover, Sinatra dined here whenever he was in the Windy City, indulging in thick, generous steaks and wonderful Italian specialties. These dishes are still around today, thanks to the wonderful tradition that was first started more than 50 years ago. EL: Brown Line to Merchandise Mart

WEST LOOP. Mitchell's has been pleasing patrons since 1923 and offers diner cuisine at its best. You know you're in for an indulgent meal when you're presented with a basket of piping hot doughnut holes as soon as you walk in the door. Then you have an extensive breakfast menu to choose from, and even the oatmeal is extraordinary. Certain meals are brought to the table still steaming in the skillet. Recommended options include fried eggs, homemade Greek toast, and hash browns. Plan a post-breakfast nap because you'll leave full. EL: Blue Line to Clinton

RIVER NORTH. Shaw's offers two distinct dining options – the casual oyster bar and the more upscale main dining room. Polished wood paneling and globe lighting set the scene, and the menu boasts a wide variety of fish and seafood: Copper River king salmon, Pacific halibut, and charred sashimi tuna, for example. Though limited, the dessert menu offers abundant temptations, and live music is offered in the oyster bar every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

LINCOLN PARK. Dishes from the tandoor – marinated in spicy yogurt, then quickly grilled and roasted – are the main attraction at Indian Grill. The Lincoln Park mainstay not only delights with tandoori feasts but offers other traditional plates as well: chickpeas and potatoes, chicken korma with cashews and cream, and fiery lamb vindaloo. The weekend brings a reasonably priced lunch buffet with a host of favorites. For dessert, mango ice cream is highly recommended. Go on a Friday or Saturday to catch live sitar music.

STREETERVILLE. Les Nomades is quintessentially formal and quintessentially French. Quiet, murmuring table conversation, peppered with "mmms" and "aahs," adds to the refined atmosphere. The downstairs dining area is white, crisp and professional, whereas the cozier upstairs venue features wood paneling and a comforting fireplace. Signature dishes include almond-crusted foie gras and roasted monkfish. Civilized dining at its best.
