HYDE PARK. Interactive museums are multiplying like rabbits, but this complex is considered one of the first and best. You'll find more than 2000 hands-on exhibits, including the Zephyr (a famous train that once set a land-speed record) and the Idea Factory (whose interactive exhibits have kids of all ages learning without realizing it). Take a short tour of an authentically recreated coal mine, or pretend you're the boss in the Enterprise exhibit, which teaches about the world of business. The five-story Omnimax Theater presents shows that take visitors on a virtual voyage to outer space or under the sea.

WRIGLEYVILLE. This cozy stadium's friendly atmosphere asserts strong appeal for Chicago Cubs fans. First opened in 1914, the facility boasts ivy-covered brick walls in the outfield and a manual scoreboard that helps promote a good-old-days ambience. The place is such a local legend that any visit to Chicago must include a day at "the old ball game." And just to avoid potential heartache: any home run ball hit by the other team must be thrown back onto the field. Tours, on days they're scheduled, are offered from 9:30am till 4:30pm.

MIDWAY. Tight fairways with overhanging trees make getting off the tee vital to scoring well on this challenging Donald Ross course. Rolling fairways result in uneven lies for approach shots to small, very quick greens. Guarded by a number of bunkers, greens can mean trouble. With the majority of greens sloping away, stopping the ball on the green can prove to be a task.

LIBERTYVILLE. This beautiful course, built on rolling terrain, features wide fairways and large greens. Thick prairie grass and wildflower-covered hills border immaculate fairways. Accurate club selection is important to avoid long, difficult putts on speedy greens. In addition, a variety of hazards makes dangerous shots possible.

DOWNTOWN. One of Chicago's top attractions, Millennium Park is a 24.5-acre park that features an ice-skating rink, outdoor theaters, and attractive tree-lined promenades. Thousands of people gather here each day to take in the park's beauty over lunch or to enjoy its many fascinating sights, among them the dynamic "Crown Fountain," two towering glass structures that feature changing videos and lights dramatically bathed by cascading water. The stunning Harris Theater for Music and Dance, a state-of-the-art facility that hosts performances by groups like the Jazz Institute of Chicago and Chicago Opera Theater, is also located in Millennium Park. Bounded by Columbus and Drive and Michigan Avenue to the east and west and Randolph and Monroe Streets to the north and south, respectively.

6. Chinatown

CHINATOWN. One of Chicago's most unique neighborhoods, Chinatown offers Far Eastern charm in the Midwest. Featuring scores of terrific Chinese and Cantonese restaurants and bakeries, the neighborhood has a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of folks who visit. Shoppers also enjoy cozy, family-owned bookstores and gift shops. If you're lucky, you'll visit Chinatown during one of its lively festivals – perhaps even the colorful Chinese New Year celebration.

7. Brookfield Zoo

BROOKFIELD. Spread across more than 216 acres, this zoo houses thousands of animals from around the world. Zoo residents live in specially designed, walk-through environments so visitors can view them in natural settings. Highlights include the Living Coast, which showcases 60 species in recreated waterfalls and ocean depths reminiscent of the western coasts of Peru and Chile. You also don't want to miss the dolphins at Brookfield's Seven Seas Panorama.

8. North Shore Country Club

1340 Glenview Rd, Glenview, IL 60025 · 847-729-1200

GLENVIEW. Though typically overshadowed by some of the area's more well-noted courses, this demanding course packs a punch. Winding through a densely wooded area, most of this course demands accuracy off the tee and caution on approach shots. Greens are typically firm, increasing the difficulty of stopping approach shots near the hole. With a number of large bunkers, the course demands an impressive short game to help salvage a good round.

DOWNTOWN. A highlight of any trip to Chicago, this museum is home to one of the best and most diverse art collections in the world. People are drawn first to the vast Impressionist collection, including the world's largest group of Monet paintings. But treasures abound, including the haunting "American Gothic" and Seurat's groundbreaking Pointillist work. The contemporary section has been expanded and now includes pieces by Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Pollock, and Warhol. The temporary shows are also well known and always receive critical acclaim. A recent retrospective focused on the life and works of Van Gogh.

10. Field Museum of Natural History

MUSEUM CAMPUS. The exterior of this hulking marble facility only hints at the historic treasures inside. The architect's goal was boldness, and he achieved it with massive columns and striking galleries filled with natural light. Visitors are immediately greeted by two massive elephants and Sue, the museum's famous Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton (she was acquired for $8.4 million)! Keep going and you'll delve into paleontology, geology, botany, anthropology, and much more. With nine acres of space to set up, curators can change displays regularly – they have more than 20 million items to choose from!
