At this spot, you kind of expect Jimmy Olsen to walk in, accompanied by Lois Lane. Lots of reporters and courthouse types hang out at Arnold's Bar and Grill. Originally built in 1861, it's the oldest "saloon" in the city. This historic eatery serves Italian-American fare at great prices. Live music several nights a week. Casual attire.

DOWNTOWN. Featuring live music seven nights a week, this notable jazz spot is a great spot for music aficionados of any stripe. The 16-piece house big band plays every Wednesday night, and a mix of vocalists, quartets and other jazz masters round out the rest of the week's roster. The downstairs bar is the perfect accent to a great night on the town.

COVINGTON. With a chic rooftop patio that offers superb views of the Cincy skyline, this hip, relaxed bar and restaurant is a Covington favorite and worth the short trip across the river. Try an acclaimed cosmopolitan or one of the 20 varieties of scotch at the 40-foot downstairs bar. If the weather allows, order a meal on the patio overlooking the Main Strasse – Steak Nora, sesame-seared salmon, and vegetarian pesto pasta are a cut above typical bar food. Most nights, live jazz provides a welcome backdrop to animated conversation on the terrace. Banquet rooms also available.

COVINGTON. Looking for an authentic British pub experience? Save on airfare and make the short jaunt to Cock & Bull instead. The cozily appointed pub is decorated with dark wood and flags of the United Kingdom, and as you'd expect, the beer is high-quality and plentiful. Eighteen imported draft beers and many more bottled choices range from ales to ciders, stouts to bitters, with everything in between. Popular choices from the menu include a spicy version of bangers & mash, along with fish & chips (of course). Items more amenable to the American palate (the Queen's Nachos, for instance) are also here.

The club offers a limited appetizer menu as well as wine, beer, frozen drinks, shooters and mixed drinks. Be sure to call ahead for a reservation, as all shows require one.

MOUNT LOOKOUT. This relaxed neighborhood hangout caters to college grads and young, professional 30-somethings. Tear-inducing hot wings (25¢ on Mondays), live local bands, and plenty of TVs foster a homey, stay-all-night vibe. Whether you're huddling around the patio firepit on a chilly night or holding an impromptu pool tournament, you'll appreciate drink specials (Jäger cherry bombs are popular) and a convivial bar staff. Tuesday night karaoke attracts a lively bunch, as do occasional dance-a-thons inspired by that night's band.

MOUNT ADAMS. Cozy, warm, and adorned with album sleeves and model trains, this venerable pub is appreciated by locals for its pleasant patio (with a firepit) and stellar lineup of local jazz, acoustic, and blues musicians every night of the week. Having survived the Mount Adams nightlife scene for over forty years, the establishment pleases with comfortable environs, friendly staff (the barman has been here since 1971), and occasional specials on signature cocktails. Jimmy Buffett, among other well-known names, played here early in his career, so make sure to stop by and catch the next big thing.
