Calhoun and later inherited by his daughter, Anna, and her husband, Thomas Green Clemson, this graceful antebellum mansion is deeply rooted in the histories of Clemson University, South Carolina, and even United States. Calhoun's political career included turns as Secretary of War for James Monroe, Vice President for John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, and US Senator, and while he resided in the home from 1825 until 1850, Fort Hill played host to a parade of noteworthy names. Many personal effects belonging to the Calhouns and Clemsons remain on display in the house, including family portraits, books, and toiletries.
