Harold "Mac" McKeown learned a thing or two about making a good burger in his day. When he finished school in 1956, mentor Dan Gentry helped him buy a small roadside eatery between Clemson and Pendleton. Over the years, the walls have changed and regulars have come and gone, but one thing has remained consistently true: If you want a good cheeseburger combo in Clemson, this is the place to get it. And while you're here, keep your head on a swivel – everywhere you turn are framed faces and autographs of the famous athletes, politicians, and entertainers who've sipped sweet tea here. NB Local lore has it that Mac's has terrific shakes, but that it takes a brave soul to order one because they don't like making them.

DOWNTOWN. Tired of the plain, old bar food? Then turn to Ancheaux's, one of downtown Clemson's more unique luncheries. As name hints, the place offers up a variety of spicy, Creole-inspired numbers like seafood gumbo, but they also shake up things with creations that are Southwestern themed – the grilled chicken burritos are heartily stuffed with beans, salsa, rice, and cheese. The top-seller is a blackened chicken, bacon, and Monterey jack sandwich named the Black Jack, and considering they make all their own bread and most of their spreads from scratch, their sandwiches always have that special, homemade touch.

Sure, we're all familiar with the burrito-assembly factories that popped up from one corner of the US to another over the last 10 years or so, and they've certainly done their part to diversify our lunch choices. Two things make Super Taco stand out from the familiar franchises, though: it's locally owned, and they're absolutely dedicated to using the freshest available ingredients to create their tasty, Tex-Mex specialties. Best of all, they've got some of the best prices in town.

Classic deli-style sandwiches, soups, and specialty salads are the forte at this Clemson sandwich shop, which is located about a mile away from campus. Their creative sandwich ideas incorporate tons of surprising ingredients and tag-teams, including an awesome cucumber, turkey, and thousand island number. They also serve bagels, gourmet coffee, and other breakfast options early in the morning.

PENDLETON. If old-fashioned Southern cookery is what you crave, this humble-yet-friendly dining room on the outskirts of Pendleton serves up just that. The servers smile and "Hey, y'all" frequently, and though regulars do get special treatment, new customers receive first class care as well. Food is doled out cafeteria-style, and, oh, what good food it is – homemade mac-n-cheese, tomatoes-n-okra, fried chicken, green beans, and so on. They serve up some awesome breakfast eats, as well; if you're up early, give Dyar's a shot then, too.

DOWNTOWN. Just a short walk from the cluster of bars downtown (and campus), Eddie Spaghetti is a good, inexpensive option when you're craving homestyle Italian but on a limited budget. The kitchen cooks up everything from scratch, and there are a handful of lunch specials priced at under eight bucks, including eggplant parmigiana, baked ziti, and lasagna. Calzones and hot subs are there for the tasting as well, and Eddie's also tosses some pretty terrific pizza pies.

The legendary Anderson hotdog joint opened its Clemson outpost several years back, and it's going as strong as ever. No fries, no burgers, no corndogs – just hotdogs, with or without (onions). The reason for the limited menu is quite simple: Skins serves the best blended pork and beef dogs you'll ever taste, and no matter what your appetite's like, one dog absolutely won't do! Chips and homemade cake are available as well. You're welcome to hang out as long as you want and checkout the news clippings and framed odds and ends decorating the walls, including a sign that reads, "The language you use in church is good enough to use here."

DOWNTOWN. Coming from central campus to downtown, TD's is the first bar you see because it occupies one of the most visible pieces of real estate in town. That said, TD's has been a popular gathering place for students since George I held office thanks to the always-successful combination of good eye-candy, full bar, tasty eats, and solid entertainment (ranging from live bands and karaoke to disco nights). In the afternoon, TD's kitchen serves up burgers, sandwiches, and meat-n-three plates that are the popular lunch choices for students and staff alike.

CENTRAL. The classic small, Southern town meat-n-three, Central Station specializes in the type of homestyle eats moms used to make back in the days when "I Like Ike" pens were all the rage. Bring your appetite with you if you do plan to visit – their buffet spread features no shortage of dishes you won't be able to resist, usually headlined by chicken and, on Friday nights, fish. Best of all, at $6 and $9, respectively, lunch and dinner here won't empty your wallet!

DOWNTOWN. One of Clemson's longest running and most popular bars, Tiger Town Tavern has been a College Avenue staple since 1977, when it took over the spot once occupied by the Red Carpet Lounge. For several years, TTT got by as a beer-only pool hall, but remodeling in 1991 and again in 1994 resulted in more square footage and a full-service kitchen. These days, the place stays as packed as ever, with students, locals, alumni, and curious tourists stopping in, especially on game days, to tip a glass, bottle, or can and soak in the atmosphere of this very well known college town watering hole. NB Top of the Tavern, located upstairs, is a private bar that's licensed to serve on Sundays.
