This is casual, eclectic, international cuisine at its best. Billing itself as a "world café and juice bar," Johnny Mango draws its inspiration from the Caribbean and Central America, focusing on grains and veggies. Fruit and veggie-blend drinks blended with yogurt or soymilk cater to the New Age set. Beefy burritos, French fries, and barbecued chicken satisfy heartier appetites. The brightly colored décor is both whimsical and hip, thus equating the trendy atmosphere.

Karl's, across the street from the courthouse and the Justice Department, is a well-known lunch hangout for judges, lawyers and other officials. The discreet booths, placed among greenery and brass, allow patrons to relax over thick deli sandwiches (such as corned beef and steak pastrami) or classics like chef's salads, burgers or old-fashioned, toasted BLTs. Service is great, and Karl himself will probably come by to check on you.

This Little Italy café and bakery is the perfect spot to have lunch or a cup of coffee while people watching from the open, glass-front café. Start with a hefty Stromboli stuffed with sausage, vegetables and ricotta, or sample a slice of pizza with the thinnest, crispiest crust imaginable. Locals flock here to buy Presti's famous hand-twisted bread. If you're lucky, there will be some hot loaves from the oven to sample.

Near the museums of University Circle, Sergio's offers fantastic food in a sunny, friendly restaurant. The small dining room fills up quickly, as does the tropical garden patio in nice weather. The house specialty is Shrimp Baiana which is flashed in a hot pan with garlic, scallions, coconut milk and malaguetta pepper. Try a Caipiranha (the national drink of Brazil) or passion bubbles (sparkling wine made with passion fruit). An upbeat, delicious experience for lunch or dinner. Dress is business casual.

Sokolowski's serves cafeteria-style what could only be characterized as "comfort food," but the place is a local institution and attracts a diverse cast of regulars. From politicians to celebrities to blue-collar types, everyone comes for the Polish food and the large portions. Step in line and point to your favorite--pot roast, ribs, pierogis or fried fish. This food isn't for the health-conscious, but it's awfully good. And while you're here, sample a local brew and take in the authentic flavor. You can't find these places everywhere.

Just off University Circle, That Place on Bellflower has been attracting locals and visitors for more than 25 years. The former carriage house has retained its old-fashioned charm with exposed beams and dark brick. The food pulls in large lunch and dinner crowds who come for lobster bisque, exotic salads, roast duckling, Beef Wellington and country-style spaghetti with French feta. The dessert tray usually holds exotic fruit concoctions as well as huge chocolate selections. Dress is business casual.
