Cologne was originally named Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinesis in 50 AD by Emeror Claudius in honor of his wife, Agrippina. Today it is the gem of Germany's Rhineland region. The city stands as a center of national business and commerce, particularly in media and communications. The Dom, or church, was built in 1248 and is the largest in the country. Its soaring twin spires are a marvel to behold. Kölners are a friendly and proud people who take great pride in their city on the Rhine. Numerous attractions also abound. In addition to the Dom, visitors should check out the historic Rathaus and the ever-popular Chocolate Museum. A visit to Cologne, though, is not complete without a sampling of Kölsch, the local beer of choice. Other exciting opportunities include a Rhine Cable Car tour or river cruise to neighboring Düsseldorf. An abundance of delicious restaurants, fun bars and trendy nightclubs abound, making Cologne a must-visit city when in Germany.
