Originally founded in 1926 as a private collection of exotic animals, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was deeded as a non-profit public trust to the people of Colorado Springs in 1938. The zoo's collection includes 650 animals, representing 143 different species, 30 of which are endangered. The zoo's world-renowned giraffe herd is featured in the new African Rift Valley exhibit. Aside from the natural surrounding mountain inspiration, visitors experience both endangered and non-endangered animal species in Asian Highlands, Wolf Woods, Primate World and My Big Backyard. Your zoo admission includes access to the Will Rogers Shrine, located 1.4 miles further up the mountain and providing wonderful views of the Pikes Peak region. (© 10Best) Somehow, the stunning natural scenery that surrounds the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo makes its 750 animals seem even more at home in their environments. The zoo is home to the world's most successful giraffe-breeding program (185 births since 1954).
