DOWNTOWN. Built in 1850, this was the home of General James and Mary Boykin Chestnut (notable for her "Diary of Dixie," published posthumously in 1905), and in 1864, Confederate President Jefferson Davis stayed here. The property has two carriage house suites and three rooms in the main house, each individually furnished with antiques, whirlpool tubs, and luxury linens. Breakfast can be served in your room or the dining room. The historic district location is convenient to the city's restaurants and attractions.

THE VISTA. The Hampton Inn downtown isn't a high-end property, but it enjoys a super location in The Vista and is reliably clean and comfortable. Guest rooms have queen or king beds, coffeemaker, cable television, and on-demand movies and video games. On-site features include an outdoor pool, exercise room, and business center. The Hampton's signature "On the House" breakfast is served seven days a week. Meeting room for 30. 122 rooms.

THE VISTA. Opened in 2007, the Hilton Columbia Center has the most modern amenities and facilities plus a fantastic location overlooking the Statehouse. Sporting a contemporary color palette, guest rooms are especially cozy and well-appointed, with marble and granite bath and large flat-screen TV. Guests can enjoy the pool and fitness center, get work done in the business center, or savor a meal at the on-site Ruth's Chris steakhouse. Event space to accommodate 225. 222 rooms and suites.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA. Located right on campus, this hotel is understandably popular with parents and friends who come to visit USC students or catch a Gamecocks game. The historic portion of the hotel was built as a private residence in 1912; today, the property has thoroughly modern conveniences and is one of the best choices in downtown Columbia. Well-equipped rooms and suites have complimentary Internet access, cable TV, mini-fridge and microwave. A fantastic, complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast is served each morning. 117 rooms and suites.

IRMO / ST ANDREWS. Situated northwest of downtown Columbia, this large Radisson is ideal for meetings and corporate events with space to accommodate gatherings of up to 1300 people. A full business center is on-site, along with complimentary WiFi throughout. COLUMBIA NORTHWEST. If you're in town for a longer stay, or just want the space that a suite affords, the Residence Inn is a great choice. Accommodations are available in several configurations, but all feature a well-equipped kitchenette, two TVs, and a sofa bed in the living room. DOWNTOWN. A picturesque Queen Anne style home, Rose Hall was built in 1898. The four guest rooms are Victorian charmers, with antique furniture, ornate fabrics and wallpapers, and floral rugs and pillows. Guests are treated to a wonderful breakfast in the dining room each day, and the hosts maintain a fully-stocked refreshment area should you need a little between-meal sustenance. For trivia hounds: Charles Frazier (author of Cold Mountain) lived on the second floor of this house during his time as a grad student at USC.

DOWNTOWN. The 1425 is a wonderful alternative to more anonymous hotels. Personable and helpful hosts make every effort to ensure your comfort, and they are extremely knowledgeable about the city and what it has to offer. The inn features five unique rooms with a decorator touch – all have queen or king beds, private bath, and hardwood floors. Turn-down service (with chocolates!) is standard. Breakfast, in the informal dining room, is cooked to order.

FIVE POINTS. This relatively large inn is well located near the University of South Carolina and its surrounding shops, restaurants and bars. Start each day with a hearty continental breakfast and end the day with chocolate and brandy left during the nightly turndown service. With 29 rooms and meeting facilities to accommodate up to 30 people, this is a great choice for a business retreat or group travel.
