DOWNTOWN. It's not actually a vineyard, but wine nevertheless plays a central role at this downtown establishment, which is a recipient of Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence. The menu changes seasonally to incorporate the freshest produce, but you'll find options such as cabernet-braised lamb shank over herbed polenta with caramelized root vegetables, grilled filet of beef with rosemary and garlic new potatoes, and sesame-crusted ahi with orange and soy glazes. Reliable fine dining, and popular with politicians and area professionals.

FIVE POINTS. A Five Points fixture, the always-busy Harper's serves up American classics, many with a Southern twist, in a casual, friendly setting. Main course options range from a pimento cheese-crusted filet mignon to baby back ribs to fontina and bacon-stuffed chicken with mustard sauce to maple-bourbon glazed double pork chops. A favorite for Sunday brunch, too, when waffles, omelets and French toast join the regular lunch menu's selection of sandwiches and salads.

DOWNTOWN. For some 20 years, Hennessy's has been the de facto fine dining establishment in town. Although the elegant setting is ideal for special occasions, it's popular for business dinners and "just because" meals as well. The expertly prepared American Continental cuisine includes a few Southern-style options – you might start with oysters Rockefeller, escargot en croute or she crab soup, and move on to prosciutto and goat cheese-stuffed veal chops, grouper Hennessy (crusted with almonds and herbs), shrimp Creole or seared scallops with pumpkin risotto.

THE VISTA. Motor Supply was the first restaurant to open in the revamped Vista district – a couple of decades in the business has only strengthened its reputation as a great place for a casually upscale meal. Menus change twice daily but usually include a grilled steak or two plus dishes such as house-brined pork chops, Dijon-fried eggplant over spinach and artichoke hearts, steamed mussels, and sautéed shrimp with ham and grits. Their wine list has garnered a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and their Sunday brunch is among the best in town.

SHANDON / ROSEWOOD. Rockaway's undeniably has the best burgers in town. This classic establishment is the place to be before and after University of South Carolina football and basketball games. Great burgers, addictive fries, and a diverse crowd of students, families, and local professionals make this an enduring local favorite. Not to mention visiting politicos (like George W. Bush).

Notable for prime steaks, upscale decor, elegant but relaxed ambience, first-rate service, and an impressive wine list, the restaurant is ideal for business dinners and special occasions. You truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu, from shrimp cocktail and crab-stuffed mushrooms to broiled rib-eyes or chocolate sin cake. An exceptional meal from start to finish.

FIVE POINTS. The Salty Nut is among Columbia's favorites for lunch and for hanging out with friends over a beer or three. The menu covers all the bases: huge half-pound burgers with all sorts of toppings, big crunchy salads, peel and eat shrimp, piled-high sandwiches, and even tater tots. The wraparound deck is prime real estate on balmy nights – people stake their claim and stay until the wee hours.

COLUMBIA NORTHEAST. Solstice Kitchen & Wine Bar is ideal for a business dinner or a date – when you want to impress, this is a fantastic choice. The menu has a little something for everyone, with starters, small plates, and full-size main courses. Standouts have included pan-seared scallops in preserved lemon-sage brown butter with spinach-walnut ravioli, a petit filet mignon with fried green tomato, goat cheese and bacon-tomato confit, whiskey-brined double pork chop, and lobster risotto. The wine list is extensive, and has earned the restaurant a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Numerous by-the-glass options.

FT JACKSON / EAST COLUMBIA. Popular Tombo Grille presents American and Southern-style cuisine with an international touch. Enjoy Asian-flavored bouillabaisse, veal meatloaf, a tuna-stuffed burrito, a pasta, or a grilled rib-eye steak with balsamic reduction and herb compound butter. Like sister restaurant Motor Supply Company, Tombo's wine list is well thought out and reasonably priced.

FIVE POINTS. Thanks to its Five Points location, this long-standing local favorite has a loyal clientele comprised mostly of students and government workers. Yesterday's specializes in homestyle cooking, with a menu full of the comforting dishes you grew up with plus a few south-of-the-border options.
