DOWNTOWN. Started as a stand at the Assembly Street Curb Market in 1935, Cromer's is a real Columbia original. The place is still family-owned and it still offers roasted peanuts, but you can also find boiled peanuts, pistachios, nut brittles, candy apples, popcorn, snacks and other fun items like sno-cone makers and cotton candy wagons. And it's all guaranteed to be "the worst in town!" You can find out about that last part when you visit!

FT JACKSON / EAST COLUMBIA. Opened in 1974, Happy Bookseller is a Columbia institution. The original owners were even honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Booksellers Association. They sold the shop in 2003 to an employee, who has kept the independent bookstore vibe and spirit. The shop keeps a large and diverse stock on-hand, with plenty of comfy couches and chairs for lounging while you peruse the latest bestseller or obscure novel. They also host author talks and signings regularly, and have a cheery lunch café.

COLUMBIA NORTHWEST. Two of life's finer pleasures – chocolate and books – combined in one marvelous little shop. Stop by in the morning for a hot cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin or cinnamon roll. Late in the day, you can enjoy a fine gourmet chocolate, slice of pound cake or fresh-baked cookie. Don't neglect the books – the selection may be limited, but it's high-quality and fun to browse through.

THE VISTA. Eye-catching art glass from Mark Woodham and Tom Lockart. Along with traditional vases, bowls and paperweights, the artists create one-of-a-kind perfume bottles, sculptural pieces, and birdfeeders, even functional sinks and light fixtures. The gallery adopted a lighthearted barn motif in remembrance of its original location. Plan to visit during studio hours for a fascinating glimpse of the artists in action.

FIVE POINTS. Columbia's record expert, Papa Jazz is known around the country for its exceptional jazz collection and uses a stringent system to grade the stock of used LPs and CDs. But they don't limit themselves to jazz, incorporating a host of genres from funk to indie rock to reggae. Hard-to-find records are frequently discovered here, and the wildly knowledgeable staff is more than happy to take special orders. Musician Amos Lee worked here back in the day, too.

FT JACKSON / EAST COLUMBIA. If you love unique, handmade goods, this incredible shop will delight you. It carries items made by Third World artisans and focuses on the craft rather than the income (with emphasis on fair trade). Craftspeople are paid well for their time, they work under favorable conditions, and they share with the customer their culture and their talents. The merchandise includes breathtaking Oriental rugs, beautiful handmade papers, carved trinkets, and children's toys. You'll also find clothing, home accessories and a variety of decorative items.

FIVE POINTS. An elegant shop that brings out the gourmand in everyone! You'll find shelves stocked with fine wines, aged cheeses, specialty coffees, gourmet items, made-in-the-South foods, cigars and kitchen accessories. The store also boasts a wonderful little café where you can fill up on creative sandwiches such as a goat cheese and sun-dried tomato pesto panini, or Black Forest ham on French bread with Nicoise olives, cornichons, Dijon, lettuce and tomato (served with a side like dill potato salad, deviled egg, pasta salad or cole slaw). Not in the mood for a sandwich? Opt for a salad or a cheese and pâté plate. Finish with a house-baked cookie or brownie.
