SHORT NORTH. In the artsy Short North district, this vegetarian café offers a peaceful sanctuary from the bustle of city life. The premise is simple-healthy food made from scratch daily and served on rustic community tables. But the hearty soups such as Gypsy vegetable, dense homemade breads such as Grains of the Goddess, and heaping salad plates ensure that simplicity won't leave you hungry for flavor. Top it all off with some of the best cookies, cakes and cinnamon rolls in the city.

GRANDVIEW. Cap City Diner is primarily a lunch and dinner spot, but on Sundays, the extensive brunch selection draws big crowds. From eggs Benedict and oatmeal Brûlée to salads, meats, and Cap City's gourmet sandwiches, this brunch will satisfy any palate. But make sure you don't fill up before you have a chance to sample the 24K carrot cake or the Big Cup O' Chocolate - a mug of warm, double chocolate lava cake topped
with triple vanilla bean ice cream.

DOWNTOWN. This restaurant and brewery, located on popular High Street, is a registered historical landmark that was built in 1897. It's easy to spot thanks to its turn-of-the-century, multicolored, Art Deco elevator façade. Inside, ornate ceilings, tile floors and polished banquettes add a sense of nostalgia. Finer dining occurs in the back with patrons enjoying house specialties such as jambalaya, steak frites and Pan-Seared Walleye. A rowdier crowd congregates at the front and enjoys house brews such as Procrastinator Dopplebock, a dark lager that makes you want to put everything else off until tomorrow.

BREWERY DISTRICT. Certified master chef and local celebrity Hartmut Handke earns raves for his eclectic New American dishes. The dramatic interior of this revamped 19th century former Schlee Bavarian Brewery with vaulted ceilings and well-appointed dining room takes a backseat to the food when seasonal specials and popular favorites such as Black Angus Tenderloin Steak, poached Chilean Sea Bass, or cream of white asparagus soup arrive at the table.

DOWNTOWN. This is the best lunchtime deli in Columbus, but breakfast (available until 10:30 on weekdays and 2pm on Sundays) is also a treat. Fresh-brewed coffee, sticky buns hot from the oven, cheese blintzes with preserves, hearty breads and bagels, and smoked fish breakfasts beckon people to stop in. Relax in the dining area and then browse the extensive, informative retail store for oils, preserves, cheese, and other staples.

DOWNTOWN. Another popular restaurant run by Cameron Mitchell, here he offers lobster, chops, crab cakes, and heavenly mashed potatoes, but perhaps is best known for the dry-aged steak. Ornate high ceilings, soaring wood post and beam architectural detals, wrought iron arches and dramatic lighting add a sophisticated backdrop. The wine list is one of the best in town.

Reasonable prices and a "rock around the clock" character are just two of the things that keep this retro diner bustling. Black and white checkerboard floors, saltshakers shaped like old-fashioned Coke bottles, red leather booths and stools, and memorabilia on the walls evoke the era of 50's icons. Classic diner fare and great breakfast is served all day and includes cheesy omelets, Belgian waffles, French toast, and steak and eggs. Don't forget to order a thick milkshake to sip alongside your selection.
