SHORT NORTH. Down a narrow street surrounded by private homes, this off-the-beaten-path Italian restaurant lives up to its location by serving creative takes on classic dishes. You won't find red sauce here, instead the husband and wife team of John Dornback & Trish Gentile offer sensational seasonal fare such as a roasted beet carpaccio, Tuscan onion soup, or a grilled ostrich fillet with butternut squash purée in a fig-balsamic reduction.

Not a lot has changed at "the Dube" since it made its debut on the Columbus restaurant scene back in the 1940s. But the draw for a mixed crowd from professor-types and students from Ohio State University, to families is the food. Reasonable prices and well-portioned sandwiches, pizza, burgers and salads, plus plenty of Greek specialties keep them coming back. The bonus: it stays open late, and the jukebox is great!

The Florentine is a local institution with cozy ambience, a tried-and-true menu, and friendly rapport with customers. Regulars come early for Roman Bread (crusty and brown with butter, garlic and plenty of provolone and Gorgonzola) and, of course, the most popular item on the menu, spaghetti and meatballs generously laden with a thick, zesty tomato sauce.

Chef and owner Matthew Litzinger honed his skills at the Culinary Institute of America and presents classic French cooking with trademark attention to detail and presentation. On the menu, you'll find such appetizers as escargot and pate alongside entrees of pan-seared grouper, beef tournedos, pheasant and sweetbreads. Desserts range from the decadent bittersweet chocolate dessert similar to a denser mousse and served with coffee sauce, to a spa-like poached pear in gewurztraminer, honey and cardamon, served with Grand Marnier flavored nonfat yogurt.

Rigsby's describes itself as "Venice meets Columbus in the heart of the Short North" and indeed this is the place to go for an ever-changing menu of seasonal fare inspired by the cuisine of Italy and the Mediterranean. Sip an aperitif or martini, nibble a small plate of empanadas or spicy shrimp bruschetta or go for the full meal and add a cheese course with artisan fromages both imported and local. Each choice is well complemented by the upscale, metropolitan bistro stmosphere and attentive service.

Executive Chef Thomas Smith describes his menu as "global cuisine with strong roots in classic French and Italian flavors." The result is nothing short of delectable. Classic dishes such as grilled lamb chops come in a roast garlic reduction accompanied by cassoulet of white beans, glazed baby carrots. The pork tenderloin is given a similar punch of flavor with dried cherry and Marsala sauce, apple wood braised cabbage and warm sweet potato salad. A good place for a family dinner, the children's menu has plenty of kid-friendly faves. Save room for dessert!
