About Copenhagen Attractions & Activities
Travelers aware of Copenhagens 18th-century conflagrations may assume that the city offers little of historical value or that most attractions date from more recent times. Thats hardly the case. Fires definitely incurred damage, but the city not only salvaged great structures but added later architectural gems. Foremost among Copenhagens attractions are the Rundetårn, an observation tower honoring astronomer Tycho Brahe, and Amalienborg Palace, the royal residence thats composed of four Rococo mansions. Other cant-miss sights include the Rådhus (Town Hall), with its ornate interior and gilded statue of Bishop Absalon (founder of Copenhagen), and the Royal Library, whose black-granite exterior is a beacon of modernity. Of course, no feature is more visible than Tivoli, the citys much-loved amusement park and a destination for culture, sociability, and dining as much as for thrilling entertainments. Factory tours, excursions to Sweden, and side trips to Kronborg Slot considered the inspiration for Shakespeares Elsinore in Hamlet also prove worthwhile. And although its low-key, The Little Mermaid statue recalling Hans Christian Andersens story is a must-see for all who visit Copenhagen. -- Kelly Sigmon, Senior Editor
