5. National Soaring Museum

ELMIRA.   Established in 1969, this museum charts the history of soaring and of flight without engine power. Elmira's terrain has hills facing various directions, which means that soaring is possible no matter the origin of the wind. It has been a favorable location for such pursuits since before the 1930s. The museum offers displays of gliders and sailplanes, along with artifacts and documents related to them. Flight simulators up the ante on fun, and next door, at Harris Hill Soaring Center, actual rides are available.   (© 10Best)
