1. Arnot Art Museum

ELMIRA.   Housed in an early 19th-century mansion, this museum continues the collections of Matthias Arnot, who initially acquired European paintings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. They're supplemented today by American pieces from the 19th century, and items representing Egypt, Asia, and pre-Columbian America. The museum, open since 1913, also features traveling exhibits, educational programs, and more. Its focus is on representational works. Especially notable is Arnot's picture gallery, set with its original assemblage of art.   (© 10Best)
