NORTH BEACH. One of the area's two or three top attractions, Texas State Aquarium allows visitors to stand safely onshore and explore the deep, mysterious waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The state-of-the-art facility – dedicated to educating, enriching, and entertaining audiences from all walks of life – lets visitors watch sea turtles, otters, stingrays, and even a 9-foot American gator named Bocephus (Hey, this IS Texas!) frolic, relax, and even feed in carefully created habitats. Of course, the most stunning displays are at Dolphin Bay – an enormous saltwater tank that has its own "underwater" viewing area – and at Islands of Steel, a shark tank designed to look like an offshore oil and gas platform. A gift shop and food court are located on-site, making this a great place to spend the entire afternoon.
