9. Texas State Aquarium

NORTH BEACH.   One of the area's two or three top attractions, Texas State Aquarium allows visitors to stand safely onshore and explore the deep, mysterious waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The state-of-the-art facility – dedicated to educating, enriching, and entertaining audiences from all walks of life – lets visitors watch sea turtles, otters, stingrays, and even a 9-foot American gator named Bocephus (Hey, this IS Texas!) frolic, relax, and even feed in carefully created habitats. Of course, the most stunning displays are at Dolphin Bay – an enormous saltwater tank that has its own "underwater" viewing area – and at Islands of Steel, a shark tank designed to look like an offshore oil and gas platform. Kids (ages 11,10,9) loved it. Hands on sting ray exhibit was the best part of their day. Although small, it was a fun 4-5 hours if you take your time. Subway / short-order type food service was good at normal prices.
