NORTH BEACH. This World War II-era vessel was involved in almost every major naval skirmish in the Pacific Theater. In fact, the Japanese propaganda machine mistakenly reported the ship's demise so many times that her crew began to refer to her as the "Blue Ghost." When the carrier was decommissioned in the early 1990s, civic leaders in Corpus Christi petitioned to have her dry-docked in the bay so that she could become the centerpiece of a museum honoring the lives and careers of Navy personnel from World War II to the present. Today, the "Lexington" attracts thousands of visitors each year, most of them young children keen on learning more about their country's history.
