4. Port Aransas

PORT ARANSAS.   Located less than an hour's drive from downtown Corpus Christi, Port Aransas sits on the northern tip of Mustang Island, which earned its name from the wild horses that inhabited the island in the 19th century. Port A, as locals know it, offers a relaxed setting that's ideal for a day's outing or a weekend (or even week-long) trip. The little Gulf-side town features great restaurants, unique shops, bird-watching, scenic boat cruises, cycling, parasailing, kayaking, and fishing from the shore, pier, or chartered boat. Of course, lounging on the wide-open beaches – like the ones you'll find at Port Aransas Park, Nueces County Park, and elsewhere on Mustang Island – is also one of the town's most popular diversions.
