MUSTANG ISLAND. Located on Mustang Island, this Italian joint is a popular place to refuel after a day spent enjoying the warm Gulf waters. Friendly and informal, B&J's serves tasty eats ranging from specialty pizzas to subs. Opt for a signature, hand-tossed pie, or go for the "build your own" alternative, which allows you to hand-select everything from pepperoni, ham, and sausage to pineapple, jalapenos, and mushrooms. In addition, they feature a decent wine list and a large number of imported and domestic brews.

SOUTH CORPUS CHRISTI. For authentic Chinese food in Corpus Christi, locals usually turn to this comfortable, unpretentious restaurant, whose daily specials encourage a fair amount of traffic, especially at lunch time. Slightly more Americanized dishes are available for those with less adventurous palates; meanwhile, seasoned veterans find to their liking Bamboo's flavorful stir-fries and selection of spicy dishes (denoted on the menu by a small, pepper-shaped icon).

SOUTH CORPUS CHRISTI. Owned by the family of Dallas Cowboy (and former Texas A&M) linebacker Dat Nguyen, this restaurant adds the exotic tastes of traditional Vietnamese fare to the local dining scene. The place's sleek, corporate decor stands in contrast to its mundane strip mall location – framed pictures of the Cowboys' standout linebacker do add a touch of personality. As for food, diners find themselves confronted by a myriad of choices: Start with spring rolls, pho bo vien (beef meatballs), or pho ga (chicken and rice noodle soup)? And for the main dish, will it be sweet and sour shrimp or the hearty All Star Combo (marinated beef, chicken, and shrimp served over rice and accompanied by an egg roll)?

From neighborly service to a casual, unpretentious setting, the place makes patrons feel right at home, whether they're long-time regulars or neophytes. DOWNTOWN. Locally owned and operated, this downtown trattoria provides hungry patrons with a bit of Old Country flavor to soothe their hungry souls (and appetites). The intimate scene looks as if it's been taken straight from Mulberry Street: subdued lighting, Italian opera or Old Blue Eyes crooning, and classy tables. Indeed, if the intent is to impress with a romantic dinner setting, then Mamma Mia's is right on target. Masterful cuisine ranges from staples like chicken marsala to creative fare like fried shrimp parmesan with linguini and tomato sauce. Of course, desserts are a must, and skipping something as delightful as homemade tiramisu or strawberry zabaglione should be downright illegal.

DOWNTOWN. Superb cuisine and a setting to match – this is Vietnam Restaurant in a nutshell. Of course, as with most international restaurants, there's more to the story than meets the eye. In this aromatic eatery's case, their fare is prepared using only the freshest ingredients, whether it's vegetables or just-off-the-boat fish and seafood. Pork, chicken, and steak entrees are also available, most seasoned with scintillating herbs and spices. You'd be wise to start off with an order of tasty shrimp-stuffed spring rolls – an appetizer not to be missed! Terrific lunch specials ensure that the place remains packed no matter what time of day it is.
