About Guatemala
To many, Guatemala represents all of Central America wrapped into one country. In the area's most populous country, reminders of ancient history and more recent corruption can be seen on almost every corner. Her Pacific coastline, mountainous core and green lowlands offer a taste of the entire region's unmatched diversity and natural beauty. Guatemala is most well known for the Mayan culture that once flourished here and is still very much alive. The most outstanding of the ruins are found in Tikal, Guatemala's top tourist attraction. With over 3000 structures, Tikal is a fascinating tribute to ancient Mayan rulers. Many other smaller ruins can be found throughout the country. Guatemala's landscape is covered in lush forests that harbor thousands of species of plants and animals, but there are also rivers for rafting, tropical coastline for surfing, and mountainous peaks for climbing. The largest lake in the country, Lake Izabal, is perhaps the most beautiful in the world with crystal clear waters perfect for sailing. Throughout the highlands of Guatemala there are over 30 volcanoes, some still active. The majestic yet foreboding peaks have shaped the land for centuries. The country's capital, Guatemala City, is a modern metropolis among ancient ruins and unaltered wildlife. Each aspect of Guatemalan culture, ancient Mayan, colonial Spanish and the modern world, can be seen vividly in Guatemala City. Open markets sell brightly colored traditional Mayan clothing. Spanish colonial architecture from the 19th century still stands throughout the city. Contemporary art, fine dining and first-class accommodations provide the luxuries of today. Have a cup of world-famous Guatemalan coffee and get ready. Guatemala's rich heritage, astounding landscape and cosmopolitan capital make for a perfect Central American vacation.
