Puerto Rico

Positioned between Hispanic and Anglo cultures, Puerto Rico is an entirely unique experience. A commonwealth of the United States, its people have been US citizens since 1917 yet the culture remains decidedly Hispanic. While English and Spanish are both official languages, only about 20% of Puerto Ricans speak English fluently. The tropical paradise is located between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic and Haiti and the Virgin Islands. The climate is practically perfect, remaining about 80 degrees and sunny year-round, and the landscape is as diverse as any with lush rainforests, dry deserts and dazzling beaches. The capital city, San Juan, is home to one third of the population and is a fantastic metropolis full of opportunities. In the oldest neighborhood, Old San Juan, you can still visit Spanish colonial structures from the 16th and 17th centuries. Nearby La Fortaleza, a fortress built to protect the settlers from cannibalistic natives, still serves as the official residence of the governor of Puerto Rico. The beaches of San Juan, including famous Condado Beach, are lined with sparkling luxury resorts, fine dining experiences, boutique shopping and wild nightlife. For a change of pace, the unique variability of Puerto Rico's topography lends itself to excellent outdoor adventures. Hike the trails of El Yunque Rainforest, take a boat out to Mona Island (the Galapagos Islands of the Caribbean), or descend into the massive Río Camuy Caves. But best of all, the diverse people of Puerto Rico are known for their warm and friendly demeanors, rhythmic salsa and bomba music, as well as their deliciously rich cuisine.

Rather than be swept along with tourists at the Eiffel Tower or the equally thronged halls of the Louvre, strike out on your own "moveable feast" tour, exploring the Paris that inspired so many writers, artists, photographers and thinkers.
