DEEP ELLUM. Despite the name, you won't find lounge lizards holed up at this eclectic, high-energy club, where the weekend calendar depends on who's manning the DJ booth. One Friday, urban and hip-hop may hold sway over dance-floor denizens; the following Sunday, the lounge may host a fetish ball. Indeed, all genres of music get the limelight. Goth, classic industrial, R&B, rock – if you're into it, Lizard Lounge is the place for you! And if the action inside gets too heavy, a rooftop deck is perfect for catching a quick breath.

DOWNTOWN. Scenesters and celebs wash away sins at this über-cool mega-club, whose stylish, multi-level layout has three distinct themes. A devilishly cool dance space occupies Level Hell, whose industrial design features polished steel, tin and aluminum surfaces, and a concrete bar. Level Purgatory provides cushy banquettes and intimate tables that are perfect for mixing and mingling. Finally, Level Heaven, awash in white, is a sleek aerie that boasts its own DJs, an angelic waitstaff, and an accommodating circular bar. Higher even than Heaven is an exclusive mezzanine bar known as Upper Heaven – its tables must be reserved in advance.

OAK LAWN. Two-stepping, tight denim, and 10-gallon hats attract Big D's best-looking cowboys to this country-western bar, which caters to a mostly gay clientele. Chipping in on the joint's popularity are great drink specials (Margarita Madness on Mondays, 22-oz. drafts for three bucks every day) and a calendar full of fun weekly activities like karaoke, line dancing (lessons are free), and Friday and Saturday's Howdy Hour. Of course, the top crowd pleasers are "duded-up" events like Miss Gay Round Up, Miss Cinco de Mayo, and the Switch-Hitters Ball.

GREENVILLE AVENUE. This rustic Greenville Avenue bar looks like an old hunt club inside – weathered wood and brick walls, pieces of taxidermy, and a pressed tin ceiling – and it certainly attracts more than its share of trophy headshots. In fact, strutting isn't an unfamiliar practice at Suede, and the music (the house DJs spin house, disco and techno) always tends to frenzy the young and beautiful 20-somethings. Themed nights, bikini contests, "hump day" dance parties, karaoke nights and summer-time live music series – there's always something to get the crowd revved, and the bar offers up great drink specials every night.

OAK LAWN. Styled after a mineshaft – but fashionably so, of course – TMC is a certain favorite if you're into loud music, drag queens and late-night dancing. Part of a quartet of like-minded establishments on the same block, this cavernous club features themed nights each week, and each one brings a different crowd and a different brand of music, from hip-hop to house to '70s and '80s. Terrific draft and well specials accompany events, and there's no doubt that you'll spend some interesting time in the mineshaft.

DEEP ELLUM. Featuring a half-price "Hookah Happy Hour" every night until 9pm, this stylish Middle Eastern lounge is quickly emerging as a popular place to retreat and unwind. The scene is enhanced by the sweet aroma of flavored tobacco, the seductive oscillations of belly dancers, and a setting of floor pillows, low tables, and imported rugs. Terrific drink specials (half-price martinis on Wednesdays) help the lounge bring in a wide clientele – from there, the allure of the place takes over.
