1. Dallas Museum of Art

DOWNTOWN. DMA's broad collection of art embraces everything from European paintings to Pacific Island sculptures. In fact, more than 23,000 items represent ancient times to the present. Frederic Church's "The Icebergs" and classic Impressionist works by masters like Edouard Manet and Paul Gauguin are part of the large collection. Limestone galleries spiral from a central area, making for easy navigation and outstanding viewing.

2. Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

WHITE ROCK LAKE. Located on the eastern shores of White Rock Lake, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden features 66 acres of blooming flower beds, manicured lawns and lush trees. The gardens house over 2400 types of azaleas, including the only publicly accessible Huang Collection specimens found outside China. The property also showcases beautiful statuary and the DeGolyer Mansion, an exquisite Spanish-style hacienda commissioned in 1940 by Texas oil baron Everett DeGolyer. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden hosts a number of special events and festivals and makes a great stop for a scenic picnic.

3. Pioneer Plaza

DOWNTOWN. Oil and cattle made Dallas what it is today, and the sculpture that distinguishes this plaza celebrates the city's history. Located adjacent to Dallas Convention Center, Pioneer Plaza measures 4.2 acres and features a world-renowned bronze. The sculpture, considered the largest of its kind, is by Robert Summers and showcases a 19th-century cattle drive. Portrayed are three cowboys on horseback and 39 steers – an impressive sight to behold!

DOWNTOWN. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, located in the former Texas School Book Depository building, examines the life, times, death and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Nearly 400 photographs, interviews, artifacts, interpretive displays and award-winning videos chronicle the historic chain of events that preceded and surrounded his assassination on November 22, 1963.

5. Southfork Ranch

PARKER. "Dallas" was possibly one of TV's most popular shows, and Southfork Ranch provided the setting for the Texas intrigues of J.R. and the Ewings. The 300-acre, once-working ranch is now a popular Dallas tourist stop and attracts some 400,000 visitors annually. Drop by the Oil Baron's Ballroom, shop at the Ranch RoundUp, or grab a bite at Miss Ellie's Delicatessen. The ranch hosts more than 1,400 private events every year. Located about 25 miles northeast of Dallas.

FAIR PARK. Each year from late September to the middle of October, more than three million people attend this excellent fair, making it one of the largest annual expositions in North America. The event features amusement rides, livestock shows, cooking contests, art competitions, college football games, outdoor musical events, and IMAX film screenings. Fair Park, the 277-acre site, is itself a National Historic Landmark and has been hosting the fair since 1886.

7. White Rock Lake Park

EAST DALLAS. Set on the shores of a reservoir constructed in 1911, this park serves as one of the city's most popular recreational areas. White Rock Lake encompasses over 1,000 acres of wooded parkland and features 9 miles of jogging and biking trails. Bird sanctuaries are located on the premises, along with wetland sites endorsed by the Audubon Society. In addition, the park provides scenic views and is host to a number of annual races, including the March of Dimes Walk America and White Rock Marathon runs. Fishing is a favored pastime as well.

8. Dallas Zoo

SOUTHWEST DALLAS. A statuesque bronze giraffe measuring 67½ feet greets guests as they enter the Dallas Zoo. The engaging complex, home to a variety of wildlife, features exhibits like "Primate Place" and "Snout Route," which presents animals with distinctive noses, like tapirs and anteaters. In addition, the "Wilds of Africa" exhibit contains some 80 species of African animals. The facility in total houses approximately 8000 animals representing some 380 different species.

9. Mesquite Championship Rodeo

MESQUITE. From April through September, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo takes place in 5300-seat, air-conditioned Resistol Arena just east of Dallas. More than 200,000 visitors show up to experience championship rodeo events, including bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, chuck wagon races, bronc riding, and barrel racing. The rodeo is also a great family activity, complete with a petting zoo, pony rides, a Western store, and Sonny Bryan's BBQ buffet. Each Friday and Saturday, the action starts with a Grand Entry parade. For convenience, competitions are broadcast on TVs throughout the venue.

10. Fair Park

FAIR PARK. This 227-acre National Historic Landmark is home to a variety of cultural exhibits, including Smirnoff Music Centre, Dallas Aquarium, Texas Discovery Garden, eight museums, a planetarium, a music hall, and the Cotton Bowl. Landscaped walking paths and the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the US add to the park's appeal. Additionally, since 1886, the site has hosted the annual Texas State Fair.
