LOVE FIELD. This cozy, family-run spot has been satisfying Dallas's craving for authentic Mexican food for over 20 years. With only a dozen or so tables to accommodate hungry diners, the place requires that you wait your turn for specials like chicken mole (featuring a near-perfect blend of chocolate and chile) or favorites like brisket gorditas, chalupas, nachos, and tacos. Choose a glass from the small but well-crafted wine list, which is designed with meal pairings in mind. If you leave room for dessert, try delectable, custard-y flan.

DOWNTOWN. If authentic Mexican is what you're after, then you need to take a trip to the Cadillac Bar. This popular restaurant features traditional decor and its ambiance is full-fledged FIESTA! The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere (complete with live music) is energetic. Locals favor the Cadillac for its renowned margaritas. Classics like Cabrito al Pastor (roasted young goat) and Camarones Enbrochette (stuffed shrimp) are among the many tasty menu items. To complete your bona fide Mexican meal, the Tres Leches dessert (pound cake soaked in three types of milk and whipped cream, then topped with cinnamon and vanilla) is an absolute must.

OAK LAWN. Home of the famous Green Bellybutton margarita, this Dallas favorite serves authentic Mexican dishes with a Texas twist. The attractive, candle-lit dining area will make you feel as if you're on the hacienda – stucco walls, hand-painted murals, high ceilings, leather furniture, white tablecloths, and colorful accessories abound. The menu is a veritable "who's who" of spicy flavor, from taqueria-style tacos and duck-filled flautas to veal short ribs in red mole sauce and roasted poblano chilis stuffed with pork barbecue. A perfect complement to any such feast is a pitcher of sangria or a signature watermelon margarita.

LAKEWOOD. This Mexican eatery distinguishes itself with a focus on tasty seafood dishes that defy your expectations of south-of-the-border fare. Start with a ceviche that locals claim is the city's best – whitefish, chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and a lime marinade make for a flavorful appetizer. Pan-fried tilapia with sauteed peppers, crispy fish tacos, oversized chicken flautas, enchiladas verdes, and a hearty fish soup (a cup of which is customarily served with entrees) represent the rest of the menu.

DEEP ELLUM. A casual, colorful dining room and shaded patio draw lunch and dinner crowds to this popular restaurant. The extensive Tex-Mex menu offers steak in a smoky chipotle wine sauce, along with quesadillas, pork tamales, sizzling fajitas, and Mexican specialties like pollo al mojo de ajo (a garlic-tinged chicken breast). Lunch specials are a hit with locals, as is the weekend brunch, where breakfast tacos are served with a smile. A kids' menu makes Pepe's & Mito's a great choice for families.

UPTOWN. The hot, delicious fare found at so many corner taco stands in Mexico goes upscale at this much-loved local chain. The McKinney Avenue offshoot has added appeal thanks to a West Village location among trendy shops and restaurants. Grab a coveted sidewalk seat and tuck into citrus-tinged fish tacos or soft tacos with pork, chicken, or beef. Mexican standards – enchiladas, fajitas, and the like – can also be had. Fresh salsas and ingredients fill the menu, a welcome change from the grease and cheese you'll find at some lesser venues.

KNOX-HENDERSON. Sleek, trendy Trece (which means "thirteen" in Spanish) attracts a varied selection of patrons, ranging from tequila connoisseurs eager to explore the restaurant's 100+ choices to couples out for a romantic meal. Start with guacamole, an appetizer with lots of added flair thanks to tableside preparation. The adjacent lounge is a superb gathering place for pre- or post-dinner drinks.

BISHOP ARTS DISTRICT. Not your typical fajitas and burritos joint, this hip addition to one of Dallas's more up-and-coming neighborhoods has carved out a cozy niche for itself. Indeed, the locally-owned eatery presents a gourmet slant on traditional Mexican cuisine, and its creative fare is sure to inspire odes in years to come. Need proof? How about baked lobster with jalapeno sauce or Mexican egg rolls? Other dishes pay flavorful homage to Mexico's Aztec and Mayan traditions.
