DENTON. Old-school Texas BBQ is what you'll find at the Denton outpost of this popular chain, which first appeared in Dallas in 1980. Thanks to a menu featuring everything from po' boys and chopped beef sandwiches to country fried steak and beef brisket dinners, Colter's makes no bones about serving some of the area's tastiest meat dishes. The place's casual decor and laid-back attitude make it a perfect choice for families.

DENTON. If Denton has a legend in the food department, this locally-owned burger joint must be it. Specializing in custom-made burgers for any taste or appetite, Denton County rarely fails to draw raves from patrons. Menu highlights include basic, cheddar-covered monsters, as well as inventive offerings topped with chili or hickory sauce. And, of course, no burger is complete without an order of ever-popular fries – unpeeled and salted to perfection. Oh, yes, and a side of baked beans. Just bring an appetite; County'll do the rest.

The assembly line starts with a hearty dose of chicken, steak, or veggies; from there, add whatever toppings you choose, from lettuce and tomato to fresh-sliced onions and cilantro. DENTON. Texas-style barbecue and traditional German eats – a curious concept, to be sure, but a tasty one. Metzler's, casually dressed in the denims and checks you'd expect of a BBQ pit, has been serving delicious eats to locals for quite some time. Indeed, regulars swear by such appetizing offerings as the chopped beef barbecue plate, ribs, and zesty German sandwiches made with meats straight from Fischer's Meat Market in Muenster. That'd be Muenster, TX, of course. Great strudels as well.

DENTON. Known all over for homestyle grub and a rustic, country store aesthetic, Rudy's has been serving zippy, tomato-based barbecue for parts of three decades now. From beef brisket and pork spare ribs to chicken and jalapeno sausage, Rudy's ably keeps with its motto: "I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables." Delicious side dishes like corn on the cob, potato salad, and coleslaw truly complete a down-home feast. Be sure to sample the banana pudding or soft-serve ice cream with hot cobbler – you'll never forgive yourself otherwise.

Light fare – including sandwiches, quiches, and salads – is served alongside more down-home offerings, and desserts include dandies like cobblers and carrot cake. DENTON. Located in one of Denton's oldest buildings, this friendly bar and grill is not only a sports venue but also a place to grab good grub. Indeed, while some folks come to imbibe a bit and watch games on the tube, most stop by for chicken fried steak, hot wings, wrap sandwiches, and burgers. If you need to work off a few extra cals, Loophole offers pool tables, video games, and darts. As for spirits, full bar service is available, and they offer great specials, especially during happy hour.
