DENTON. One of the area's oldest Italian restaurants, Bari's earned its stripes serving delicious homemade fare in a comfortable, family-friendly setting. All your favorites are here: hand-tossed pizzas, calzones, and strombolis, along with hearty eggplant rollatina, spinach ravioli, and baked ziti. Add to the mix terrific prices and service that makes even new customers feel like long-lost friends, and it's easy to see why so many locals have adopted Bari's as their neighborhood eatery.

DENTON. This cozy bistro brings European style and flavor to Denton, courtesy of Italian paninis, wrap sandwiches, and breakfast dishes like Greek omelets and homemade crêpes. Indeed, Bochy's is popular for lunch as well as for breakfast and brunch. Save room for dessert, because their cheesecakes, pies, and puddings are the stuff of local legend. The warm, inviting setting features taupe walls hung with artwork and accented by terra cotta shingles and cottage-like trim.

DENTON. Texas-style barbecue and traditional German eats – a curious concept, to be sure, but a tasty one. Metzler's, casually dressed in the denims and checks you'd expect of a BBQ pit, has been serving delicious eats to locals for quite some time. Indeed, regulars swear by such appetizing offerings as the chopped beef barbecue plate, ribs, and zesty German sandwiches made with meats straight from Fischer's Meat Market in Muenster. That'd be Muenster, TX, of course. Great strudels as well.

DENTON. This fabulous downtown bistro offers a sophisticated setting where diners can sip fine wines from Chile, South Africa, and Australia and enjoy European-inspired fare. Featured dishes include cedar-planked salmon with smoky lemon marinade, ahi tuna niçoise with fresh greens and house vinaigrette, sesame-encrusted tuna with sweet hoisin sauce, and steak au poivre in brandy peppercorn sauce. Spectacular desserts are worth saving room for as well – missing out on the signature carrot cake borders on self-deprivation. Reservations are suggested.

CORINTH. This Italian restaurant is well worth the trip to nearby Corinth, thanks to an extensive menu, impressive wine list, and upscale atmosphere. A focal point of the dining area is a wood-burning oven, where skilled staff members prepare magnificent pasta and pizza dishes. The Old World motif continues with exposed brick walls, hand-selected original artwork, and an earthy color scheme. Also contributing to an unforgettable dining experience are superb desserts and friendly, professional service.

DENTON. Don't let the strip mall setting dissuade you from this popular Italian joint, whose superb pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, and daily specials come at more than reasonable prices. Youngish, short sleeve-clad servers and glass-topped tables add to the casual ambience, and the place is a perfect fit for families or friends gathering for a hearty meal. If pizza is on your mind, their famous white pizza is nothing short of terrific, topped as it is with fresh spinach, onions, and tomatoes. Chicken marsala and veal parmesan are equally well done. To-go orders are available.

DENTON. Forget that Johnny C's is a chain, and you'll likely discover that this place is about as close to the Old Country as you can get in these parts. Designers went to great lengths to recreate an Italian farmhouse, from rustic, wrought-iron light fixtures and exposed wooden ceiling beams to cozy tables. The fare borrows heavily from traditional favorites, and included in the nightly lineup are dishes like twelve-layer lasagna, calzones, heaping pastas, and hand-made pizzas.

LEWISVILLE. Southwest of Denton, this unique eatery offers diverse culinary treats. Some dishes have a Mediterranean or Italian lilt; others boast Tex-Mex or Cajun flavor. The setting is homey, thanks to an inviting stone exterior and a dining room reminiscent of a country cottage. Mimi's breakfasts, in particular, earn local acclaim. They include a three-egg omelet stuffed with three-bean chili, melted jack and cheddar cheeses, and fresh veggies; French toast served San Francisco-style with sourdough baguette and fresh fruit; and a Belgian waffle sandwich with bacon or sausage and eggs.

Elegant Victorian dining rooms feature antiques, hardwood floors, high ceilings, crown moldings, lace curtains, and intimate tables appointed with linens and flickering candles. The scene, in fact, is only bested by the cuisine, which takes its cues from both Italian and French culinary traditions.
