DOWNTOWN. James Beard-award-winner Kevin Taylor's eponymous eatery is a favorite with local romantics and critics, who heap high praise on the innovative New American fare and cozy confines of the elegant Art Deco-style dining area. Starters like black truffle-and-roasted garlic ravioli or French foie gras serve to whet the appetite, setting the stage for Broken Arrow venison au poivre with roasted pear and butternut squash, or roasted Scottish salmon with asparagus and nicoise mashed potatoes. A superb, "Wine Spectator"-recognized wine list helps round out the experience.

LODO. One of Denver's top choices for wining and dining important clients, Sullivan's boasts a classic '40s-era steakhouse look and style – from dark wood furniture and accents to white tablecloths and a smooth-playing jazz ensemble. Expectedly, beef is the specialty, and Sullivan's chefs most assuredly know their cuts. Premiere selections include a New York strip, Kansas City strip, and Gibraltar-sized porterhouse. Seafood is reliably good as well, and the roster of bourbons, single malt scotches, and cognacs is impressive.

DOWNTOWN. A rooftop deck that affords gorgeous views of the Front Range makes Tamayo a natural after-work gathering spot. Nationally-renowned chef Richard Sandoval's offering in Denver, this sleek, contemporary Mexican restaurant is appreciated equally for its to-die-for margaritas and tequilas and its unexpected, delicious takes on old standards. Here, the chile relleno is a single roasted pepper, artfully arranged amid shrimp, Spanish cheese, and sour cream. Carnitas de puerco (pork tenderloin with avocado puree and salsa) and mole poblano are popular dinner choices. The in-house pastry chef concocts scrumptious sweets worth saving room for.

LODO. A raucous, fun-loving sort of place, Jax draws hip crowds who feast on seafood and banter back and forth with the bartenders. Try a sampler platter for incredible variety, or delve into a plate of calamari that will have you squirming with delight. Oysters, crab, lobster, pork, and beef are also featured, and several nights a week, specials provide added value on shrimp, cioppino, and the like. Great wine list.

WASHINGTON PARK. Forget about counting calories when you step into this bake shop. Savor a divine pastry, cake, or tart from the double cream vanilla bean custard puffs, white chocolate and grapefruit tarts, and flourless hazelnut chocolate cakes that beckon from the spotless display case. Breakfast, brunch, or lunch (think egg dishes, salads, sandwiches, and pastas) can also be had. Afternoon tea is a cherished tradition, and patrons claim that freshly baked scones (served with cream, jam, and lemon curd) are true to their English counterparts and the best in town.
