WASHINGTON PARK.   Forget about counting calories when you step into this bake shop. Savor a divine pastry, cake, or tart from the double cream vanilla bean custard puffs, white chocolate and grapefruit tarts, and flourless hazelnut chocolate cakes that beckon from the spotless display case. Breakfast, brunch, or lunch (think egg dishes, salads, sandwiches, and pastas) can also be had. Afternoon tea is a cherished tradition, and patrons claim that freshly baked scones (served with cream, jam, and lemon curd) are true to their English counterparts and the best in town.   (© 10Best)

I took my father here for his birthday brunch, and even though there was a hefty wait (it was Sunday brunch, after all) the experience was worth it. Located in Washington Park neighborhood in the Gaylord St shopping area - a cute old-town area - this little cafe has local, organic produce in all of their items and has an on-site pastry chef. I cannot eat wheat, so needless to say I was a little hesitant, but here's the kicker: they have a gluten-free flourless milk-chocolate hazelnut cake as a standard menu item. I was in heaven. The service was fast and friendly, the coffee and tea selections are too numerous to count, and the artwork was awesome. I will definitely be returning on my birthday for more of that cake...

The service was absolutely horrible. When going to a restaurant for breakfast, the one thing you would expect to always be full is your coffee cup. After asking three times for a refill, we finally had to take our cups to the front counter for coffee. The food was decent. The eggs were all right. My husband enjoyed his breakfast burrito. However, neither dish was especially great.

I special ordered a b-day cake for my mom's b-day. A chocolate 6 inch cake for $24.00. I could not have been any more disappointed. The cake was extremely dry and the buttercream frosting tasted like shortening/lard - it had no flavor. I was so embarrassed - not even one guest ate more than 2 bites of this overpriced, disgusting cake. I would have gladly paid the price if it was a good cake. I will never go there again.
